NORTHWEST - Monday through Wednesday, we will see a series of strong atmospheric rivers bring very heavy rainfall, warmer temperatures, and high elevation snow that will be measured in feet. Flood potential is increasing, especially for river flooding, as the week rolls on.<h1>Mon - Wed</h1>A deep supply of tropical moisture arrives Monday from the "pineapple express," or atmospheric river. Intense rainfall, gusty winds, and heavy mountain snow are expected. The ridge of high pressure helping to steer the tropical moisture northward will also lead to above-average temperatures, bringing snow levels up in elevation for Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-06 055639-1765026414726.png">With this event being so warm, significant flooding is likely for the higher terrain of the Cascades, in addition to lower elevations! Flood Watches have been issued for Washington until next Friday. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-07 174320-1765154679574.png">Rainfall totals through Thursday are expected to top 7-12 inches for large areas along and west of the Cascades. With heavy rainfall rates, we could see flash flooding develop in addition to river flooding.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-07 174347-1765154685667.png">As all of the moisture adds up and runs off into creeks, streams, and rivers, water levels will rise dramatically through the middle of the week. Many rivers are expected to reach moderate to major flood stages, including the Snoqualmie and Snohomish.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-07 064747-1765115274969.jpg">Moisture will great increase through sunrise Monday, with intense rainfall rates. As this moisture moves east and hits colder air in the Rockies more of the rain will turn to heavy snow. Temperatures will continue to climb, leading to higher and higher snowfall levels. A break arrives toward Wednesday evening and Thursday. Another weaker system is expected on Friday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/12-07_rnw cat precip-1765154725778.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Snow will be very heavy east of the Cascades, especially above 6,000 feet. Snow levels will go up and down quite a bit through the event, so driving over mountain passes in the afternoons may yield only rain at times, while at other times intense snow is expected. Stormy Weekend in the Northwest, Intense System Arrives Monday

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. NORTHERN PLAINS - Starting Monday, an Alberta Clipper will dive into the north-central U.S. to bring in some light snow for the northern Plains through the Great Lakes. Snowfall totals look to be fairly minimal with this first clipper.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/12-07_rnc bams overnight for monday-1765157490425.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The next system moves in fairly quickly behind. Wnter Storm Watches have been issued for the northern Plains on Tuesday for heavy snow, patchy blowing snow, and potentially some freezing rain on Tuesday morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-07 183329-1765157711151.png">This next clipper starts to push into the Northern Plains on Tuesday morning. Since we've seen winds return from the south, temperatures will be warmer with this next clipper which means rain, freezing rain, ice, and snow will be a problem. This starts with the northern Plains through the Great Lakes late Tuesday and into the northeast on Wednesday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/12-07_rnc to rne tuesday to wednesday-1765157790975.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The worst of the ice appears in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. A Few Clippers In the Forecast

The Northern Tier of the country is no stranger to cold. High and low temperatures will be well below average. As some of the air starts to slide east, areas like New England will take the brunt of the Polar plunge. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-07 174638-1765154804388.png">Along with the continued pushes of colder air, the strong northerly winds will create wind chill factors well below zero! When it gets this dangerously cold, even if it only lasts a day or two, bring the pets inside and remember to check on neighbors who might be susceptible to this. If you have to venture out, it's important to cover any exposed skin, as frostbite can set in after as little as 30 minutes.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-01 093932-1764607220609.png"><h1>But wait, there's more</h1>It's like clockwork at this point. Temperatures rebound for a few days and back down they go closer to the weekend. DENVER, CO - Denver saw its first significant snow this season earlier this week, with 6.5 inches reported downtown! The highest totals were reported in the higher elevations, with 11 inches recorded in Genesee.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-04 095720-1764867453909.png"><h1>Forecast Snow</h1>Further snow is in store for the Rocky Mountains as a frontal system dives in. Precipitation began in northern Utah Friday evening and will spread across Colorado overnight and into Saturday morning. Another round of snow is likely for the weekend with higher moisture content coming from the Northwest.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-05 202547-1764991557250.png"><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/rockieswnoww-1764991689293.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>With today's round and our late-week round, snowfall totals may reach upwards of a foot plus in the higher elevations.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-05 202838-1764991729249.png">This snowfall is more than welcome for some of the ski resorts in the Rockies. Overnight Snow for the Colorado Rockies

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Multiple low-pressure systems moving across the country will bring heavy rain to the Gulf Coast through the end of the week, but on the northern periphery of these lows, cold air will linger, turning rain into snow and ice! The snow started falling Thursday morning in Texas and Oklahoma before moving east Thursday afternoon. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1996640648766628256" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1996640648766628256"></div> Winter weather advisories are in effect through Friday afternoon from North Carolina through eastern Maryland for light/moderate snow and some light icing. Expect roads to be slick with temperatures in the 20s.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/pic6-1764963628163.png">Virginia into North Carolina and some areas around the Chesapeake Bay will see a round of mostly snow on Friday morning, with moderate ice accretions possible along the Blue Ridge Escarpment in Western North Carolina. Some snow may linger along the Mid-Atlantic coast into New Jersey and Delaware into the afternoon and early evening.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/FORECAST-1764971120854.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Snow accumulations look mostly minor, generally 1-3 inches, but higher elevations in the Blue Ridge Mountains could see some 3-6 inch totals. Snow & Ice Lingers for the Mid-Atlantic & Appalachians

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

MONTANA - A clipper system has been moving through the Rockies and High Plains and brought upwards of 4-7" of snowfall across portions of Montana. More snow is in store across the Northern Plains to Midwest to Northeast as the clippers move through.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/New Baron Video 3-1764813457932.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>These totals will pile up across the northern plains, with the highest totals staying out west across the Northern Rockies.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-03 162020-1764804026521.png">Gusty winds will also play a role in the forecast. We can expect rounds of 25-30mph wind gusts. In some cases, maybe even higher than that! Watch out for those wind chill temperatures as they will drop as the winds come through with each clipper system.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/12-03 rnc bams3k wind-1764786148016.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Clipper systems are notorious for bringing quick-accumulating snowfall. But, even if snow totals are not significant, it doesn't mean dangerous road conditions won't be present. The Iowa Department of Transportation reports over 70% of weather-related crashes happen when there is 2" or LESS of snowfall. Northern U.S. Bracing for Multiple Clipper Systems this Week

We're hoping many Thanksgiving travelers have made it home, because this next system has brought rain, ice, and snowfall from the Mid-South to the Northeast. The combination of an upper-level low drawing in cold air and a surface low pulling in warm Gulf moisture will set some of us up for ice, others for rain, and many for heavy snowfall. So gear up for what you can expect in your neighborhood. Kansas and Nebraska already saw 2-4" of snowfall on Monday morning.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1995549367382753424" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1995549367382753424"></div><h2>Overall Set-Up</h2>Several components come into play when we talk about different types of wintry precipitation, and the temperature profile of the atmosphere is one of the most important. In this forecast, a strong upper-level low will draw in cold air aloft. At the surface, a low will pull in warm Gulf moisture. What happens between these layers determines whether precipitation falls as rain, freezing rain, sleet, a rain/snow mix, or snow.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-01 041042-1764587449453.png">Winter alerts are starting to trim back as the low pressure system pushes farther north and east, but many remain in effect through tonight.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-02 135101-1764708672189.png"><h2>Forecast Timing</h2>Based on current timing, snow will reach the Northeast through Tuesday night before the system exits offshore early Wednesday morning.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/2025-12-02 11-14-48-1764692115278.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Snowfall totals will vary depending on how cold the temperatures get throughout the event. The heaviest totals are expected to climb over 6 inches in the Northeast. Our forecast models are topping out closer to a foot for northern New England.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-02 135106-1764708709573.png">Ice accumulations generally range from a light glaze up to 0.1". When forecasts show totals approaching 0.25" or more, power outages become possible, and travel can become nearly impossible.

NOAA/NESDIS - The GOES-R Program is currently addressing a performance issue with the cooling system encountered during commissioning of the <a href="https://media.weathernationtv.com/news/noaa-goes-s-satellite-now-goes-17/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GOES-17</a> Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) instrument.  The cooling system is an integral part of the ABI and did not start up properly during the on-orbit checkout.

A team of experts from NOAA, NASA, the ABI contractor team and industry are investigating the issue and pursuing multiple courses of possible corrective actions. The issue affects the infrared and near-infrared channels on the instrument. The visible channels of the ABI are not impacted.

THE BEHIND-THE-SCENES JOURNEY WITH GOES-17

NOAA’s operational geostationary constellation -- GOES-16, operating as GOES-East, GOES-15, operating as GOES-West and GOES-14, operating as the on-orbit spare -- is healthy and monitoring weather across the nation each day, so there is no immediate impact from this performance issue.

If efforts to restore the cooling system are unsuccessful, alternative concepts and modes will be considered to maximize the operational utility of the ABI for NOAA's National Weather Service and other customers.  An update will be provided as new information becomes available.
