<p>While travel conditions before Thanksgiving across much of the country haven't been too terrible, the other side of the timeline may be a different story! A strong wave in the atmosphere will rotate around an upper-level low dropping south, increasing precipitation chances while allowing cold polar air to spill south. This will lead to multiple impacts across the country by Black Friday (see above). </p><h1>North Side</h1><p>Fresh off the heels of the last system, heavy snow will accumulate across Montana and the Dakotas by Friday. Into the weekend, the storm will continue to strengthen, with models bringing shoveable snow totals across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes. </p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/blackfridayfun-1764187755590.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>This system will also bring the coldest air of the season so far, as temperatures will struggle to warm above freezing for some throughout the weekend. </p><p></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 125534-1764187821540.png"></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 131213-1764187939689.png"></p><p></p><h1>South Side</h1><p>Farther south, instability will grow during the afternoons as warm and humid air is pulled north from the Gulf. Powerful System To Disrupt Travel After Thanksgiving

<p>While we finish our Thanksgiving food and head back home, loads of people in the upper-Midwest are in store for a MAJOR cool down going into next week. The Climate Prediction Center has great confidence of seeing some well below average temperatures going into early December.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 111437-1764180893152.png"></p><p>But what's going on? Well it all starts at the Polar Vortex, which typically traps arctic air where it belongs, at the North Pole. However, it's expected to weaken into the next week. As a result, frigid polar air descends south, through Canada, impacting northern areas of the U.S.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/2025-11-26 11-29-15-1764174576719.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Now let's have a look at some of the impacts. Temperatures across the upper-Midwest will dwindle down into the single digits, with places like Minneapolis having a forecast low of only 1 degree next Monday.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 111446-1764180899470.png"></p><p>We can also expect the winds to kick up as this arctic air makes its way down south. This could spell trouble as some of these wind chill values will likely breach sub-zero temperatures. Some of these values getting as cold as 35 degrees below zero on Monday morning.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 111509-1764180914796.png"></p><p>With such a major cool down on the way, it's likely to shake things up in our atmosphere. Major Cooldown in Store for the Upper-Midwest

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. <p>A low-pressure system blowing through the Upper Midwest has produced over a foot of snow and winds up to nearly 80 mph! This system will continue producing snow, rain, high winds, and reduced visibility across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes through Thursday.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 110411-1764180296343.png"></p><h1>Wind Outlook</h1><p>Winds have already gusted up to nearly 80 mph in the High Plains, Wasta, and Midland, South Dakota has produced 78 mph gusts! With travel ramping up, the bigger concern might have to be higher-profile vehicles on plenty of east-west facing interstates. Wind Advisories remain in effect for the Midwest and the Ohio Valley.</p><h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 062023-1764163236021.png">Snow Outlook</h1><p>Widespread <strong>Winter Weather Alerts</strong> remain in effect from Minnesota to Michigan as this low-pressure system drops in. Heavy snow, with rates of 1-2" per hour, combined with wind gusts upwards of 40-50 mph, will make driving extremely dangerous. Whiteout conditions could make travel nearly impossible.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 110202-1764180165891.png"><strong>Blizzard Warnings</strong> also remain in place for portions of Wisconsin and Michigan. When visibility is reduced to 1/4 or less, winds are greater than 35 mph, and this lasts for 3 hours, this classifies a winter storm as a blizzard.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 110207-1764180180891.png">Northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan could accumulate up to one to two FEET of snowfall due to the nature of lake effect snow.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 110210-1764180213668.png"></p><h1>Timing</h1><p>Snowfall is tapering off in Minnesota early Wednesday, but blowing snow could still slow travel throughout the day. Cold air on the back side of the low will make for a blustery Wednesday. Lake effect snow will continue in Michigan through Thanksgiving. Eventually, this moisture will work into the Northeast for heavy lake effect Thursday into Friday.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/11-25_rne_bams3k-1764180230409.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>For more details, tune in to your Central Regional Forecast :30 past the hour.</p>

Midwest Snow Storm Triggers Blizzard Warnings

<p>An upper-level trough moving through the Great Lakes will head to the Northeast to bring rain, snow, winds, and lake effect snow by Thanksgiving.</p><h2>Forecast Timing</h2><p>A cold front will continue to push through the northeast and Atlantic Coast this afternoon to produce a few isolated to scattered rain showers. In the meantime, a low-pressure system working over the Great Lakes will continue to produce heavy snowfall, and once it clears the Great Lakes and heads into the northeast, lake effect bands will pick up for the snowbelt regions.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/11-25_rne_bams3k-1764179812680.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><h2>Snow Forecast</h2><p><strong>Winter weather alerts </strong>have been issued across the eastern shores of the Great Lakes through Friday. These winter alerts are for widely varying snowfall totals, but between 1 to 2 feet is possible, as well as winds as high as 50 mph. These combined could lead to whiteout conditions for Thanksgiving travel.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 105831-1764179941024.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-26 105837-1764179958031.png"></p><h2>Wind Forecast</h2><p>If you're holding a balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, the winds are what concern you. <p>It is that time of year again—when millions of Americans hit the road or the skies to connect with friends and family. AAA is expecting a record number of travelers this year, surpassing the record-breaking 2024. Most travelers will be hitting the road vs flying.</p><p></p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/o78PUXSJCJU" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-17 104347-1763401813998.png"></p><p>With millions hitting the roads, traffic will be hard to avoid, no matter where you are heading. However, there will be some better times to do your traveling. AAA suggests starting the journey early, but with a reasonable night of sleep the night prior.</p><p></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-17 105052-1763401888415.png"></p><p>With so many traveling over the holidays, there are some favored destinations. A Record Breaking Thanksgiving Travel Week Expected

<p>Areas in southeast Houston quickly took cover as a tornado-warned storm clipped some of the northeast suburbs. Multiple people saw this on the ground, with confirmation coming from radar that afternoon, as well. Below is the lifespan of the storms, as it went into areas close to The Woodlands and Spring.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/2025-11-25 08-19-33-1764084060214.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>The storm left pretty extensive damage in its wake, toppling trees and damaging roofs early Monday afternoon. NWS Houston Confirms Two Tornadoes from Monday's Storms

<p>Tuesday's storms brought damage to some of the communities of the southeastern U.S. As the front marches east overnight and into Tuesday, the Storm Prediction Center has downgraded the risk for severe weather to<strong> MARGINAL</strong> (level 1 out of 5) across portions of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-25 195033-1764125449340.png"></p><h2>Storm Timing</h2><p>Storms continue to move east along the cold front overnight. NOAA/NESDIS - The GOES-R Program is currently addressing a performance issue with the cooling system encountered during commissioning of the <a href="https://media.weathernationtv.com/news/noaa-goes-s-satellite-now-goes-17/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GOES-17</a> Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) instrument.  The cooling system is an integral part of the ABI and did not start up properly during the on-orbit checkout.

A team of experts from NOAA, NASA, the ABI contractor team and industry are investigating the issue and pursuing multiple courses of possible corrective actions. The issue affects the infrared and near-infrared channels on the instrument. The visible channels of the ABI are not impacted.

NOAA’s operational geostationary constellation -- GOES-16, operating as GOES-East, GOES-15, operating as GOES-West and GOES-14, operating as the on-orbit spare -- is healthy and monitoring weather across the nation each day, so there is no immediate impact from this performance issue.

If efforts to restore the cooling system are unsuccessful, alternative concepts and modes will be considered to maximize the operational utility of the ABI for NOAA's National Weather Service and other customers.  An update will be provided as new information becomes available.
