Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

After a warm and dry January, the pattern out west is finally flipping. A wave of low pressure moved through California and the Southwest to end the week and now another, more potent system, arrives Sunday with bigger impacts. Feet of snow are expected in the Sierra while inches of rain will fall in lower elevations. A line of severe storms is even possible by Monday morning in Los Angeles, with damaging winds and a tornado or two possible.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/02-11_Rsw setup-1770863078525.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>This trough will be tapping into tropical moisture, in what's known as an atmospheric river. These systems are very efficient at transporting moisture from lower latitudes to the north, leading to intense rain and snowfall at times. <h1>Flooding &amp; Severe Storms</h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-14 050115-1771071217099.png"> As the front moves onshore on Monday, jet stream energy around the trough will be focused in Southern California. While there won't be a high amount of CAPE (convective available potential energy), wind shear will be on the high end, allowing storms to rotate while bringing strong gusts to the surface. This means a few severe storms, including tornadoes, are possible. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-14 050045-1771071661817.png">The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a marginal risk (level 1 out of 5) for the wind and tornado potential on Monday from Long Beach through the SoCal night to Santa Maria, including Los Angeles. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/New Baron Video 3-1771025449661.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Flash flooding is looking possible Monday and Tuesday across portions of Southern California, including Los Angeles.<h1>Timing</h1><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/New Baron Video 3-1771025705770.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The forecast shows the rain starting to pick up in Northern California into Sunday. As the upper low slowly slides east, the precipitation will expand down to Los Angeles and San Diego along the front Monday. Rain and snow looks likely off and on into Thursday as another strong trough arrives, especially on Tuesday from the Bay Area up to the Donner Pass, where another corridor on intense rain and snow looks to move in.<h1>Heavy Snow</h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-14 052431-1771071884455.png">Winter Storm Watches are now up for parts of California for several feet of snow into midweek. Travel could be impossible in some spots with the high snowfall rates and winds. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-14 052436-1771071892978.png"> Snowfall totals could surpass 4-5 feet in some areas, like Mammoth Mountain. Resorts around Lake Tahoe could also see 4-5 feet, including I-80 and the Donner Pass. The heavy snowfall rates will make mountain travel impossible at times.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-14 055319-1771073613405.png">Even the mountains in Southern California will see heavy snowfall developing Monday afternoon and evening. Travel will be very difficult at times through early Thursday.

Heavy Rain & Snow Return to California

SOUTH - While it isn't spring yet, spring-like storms will return to the South and Southeast into the weekend. A strong low coming off the Southern Rockies will provide plenty of lift and shear to spawn severe storms, including tornadoes, and flash flood potential.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/pic6-1771068294486.png"><h2>Forecast Timing</h2>By Saturday morning, the front will still not have cleared the I-35 corridor, meaning some spots in Texas and Oklahoma may become susceptible to flooding. By Saturday night, storms will start to organize along the frontal boundary and push eastward. It won't be until Sunday that these storms move east of the Mississippi River Valley and into the Deep South, potentially disrupting weekend plans.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/FORECAST-1771071423952.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Tornado Threat</h2>Saturday, wind shear and instability should increase enough to lead to damaging winds and a few tornadoes. This risk will be highest along the Gulf coast of Texas and Louisiana. This threat will likely continue into Sunday as storms push farther east.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/pic6-1771068736381.png"><h2>Flooding Threat</h2>Current forecast models show localized areas receiving 3-5 inches of rainfall, with isolated higher totals possible. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1771023917773.png">The Weather Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT RISK for heavy rainfall across portions of Arkansas on Saturday, which may lead to flash flooding. In the West, temperatures have been extremely warm, while the East feels the repetitive shots of cold air, fresh from the Canadian Arctic. Now, as our pattern begins to shift, many people will feel the shift from bitterly cold temperatures to a more spring-like feel.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/PIC 2-1771071490803.jpg">Upper-level high pressure will strengthen and build northward as we wrap up the week. This will begin to shove the arctic air back to the north and allow a significant warm-up from the Gulf to the Canadian border.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 172148-1771028517583.png">Cities such as Sioux Falls, Minneapolis, and Chicago, which felt temperatures well below 0° for a good chunk of January, will suddenly feel temperatures that are more typical of April.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 172225-1771028552096.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 172243-1771028575806.png">With daytime highs that will push 30° above-average, record highs will be possible through Monday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 172415-1771028661894.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 172436-1771028683157.png">The southern Plains will also be feeling the anomalous warmth, helping to increase the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/active-weather-weekend-ahead">severe weather threat</a> there over the next couple of days. Confidence is very high in spring-like warmth sticking around as we head deeper into February. The chance for thunderstorms in a more spring-like pattern will continue along with it!

Temperatures Forecast To Soar Across the Central States This Weekend

ROCKIES - A trough will move onshore on Friday, ushering much-needed rain and snow on Friday and Saturday. As moisture moves in from the Pacific and interacts with colder air in place, higher elevations across Colorado, New Mexico, and parts of Utah and Arizona can expect accumulating snowfall.Mountain passes will likely see the greatest impacts, where periods of steady snow will lead to reduced visibility and snow-covered roads on this busy holiday weekend.&nbsp;A few Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for parts of New Mexico and Colorado.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 113635-1771007807488.png">Lower elevations will miss out on snow for this system, but temperatures there are expected to be warmer. That means many lower elevation locations may start as rain before transitioning to a rain-snow mix, especially during the overnight and early morning hours when temperatures are coolest. While snowfall totals in lower elevations should remain lighter, bursts of heavier precipitation could briefly coat roadways and create slushy conditions.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/New Baron Video 3-1771038849551.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>As we wake up Saturday morning, an additional 3-6" of snow will be possible especially west of Denver along Interstate 70. However, more snow is expected next week as a California system slides eastward. A foot or two of snow could be in the cards for the high country. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1771038999542.png">Beyond travel concerns, the storm will also provide beneficial moisture to a region that has been struggling with dry conditions as of late. Snowpack gains in the mountains are especially important for water supply heading into spring. Rockies Receive Some Much-Needed Help

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

NORTHEAST - As this next clipper system continues through, we can see snow and some lake-effect snow. A high-pressure system will move in, and things will taper off on Thursday night.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/02-11_rne-1770838643023.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>When all is said and done, the heaviest snow ends up in upstate New York and most of the New England area. With a few of these lake effect bands cranking well into late week, we can see some totals top out at 6"!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-11 123841-1770838732760.png">But what about those temps after the fact? Well, judging by the Climate Prediction Center's (CPC) 6-10 day outlook, we're likely to continue with these above-average temperatures even after Valentine's Day weekend. Lingering Snow in the Northeast

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

It was another cold morning on Monday across the Northeast. Many cities across the Northeast hit below zero for the air temperature! Dubois, PA broke its record low temperature for the morning, getting down to -9°.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 081947-1770650390845.png">There will be some improvement with overnight lows getting closer to seasonal by midweek.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 174938-1770684583296.png"><h1>Where does this year's cold rank?</h1>While it has been a cold winter, many colder winters have occurred in the history of weather observations in the Eastern U.S. Most of these areas have weather data dating back to the 1800s, so ranking in the bottom half or even bottom quarter is still impressive.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-06 094753-1770397848980.png">As we look ahead, temperatures will remain below average. Cold Air Remains Across the Northeast

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. It was a hot day on Monday, February 9th in the Central Plains with many locations breaking record high temperatures for this date in time. Some of these locations include spots like Sioux City, Iowa, which not only broke a daily record high, but they also had their warmest temperatures this early in the year.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 174203-1770684273700.png">Temperatures are expected to drop on Tuesday but they'll still be above-average across the northern Plains.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 135952-1770671000646.png">The warming temperatures will mean impacts from melting snow and ice, particularly where ice jams become a hazard. A flood watch remains in effect for eastern Nebraska for ice jam flood potential.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 140356-1770671044246.png">Another side-effect of the warmer weather is wildfire concerns. As winds kick up to 20-30 mph, areas of eastern New Mexico and the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas need to be mindful of grass fire ignitions. Anything that gets going could spread quickly, as dry as this area has been recently. Today will be a mostly dry day with pleasant conditions, but a cold front moves in tomorrow. This system will bring in widespread rain. Northwestern portions of Washington should expect heavy rainfall throughout the day on Thursday. Rainfall could reach up to 4 inches for these areas. Everyone else should expect 1 to 2 inches of rain over the next 3 days. Plan commutes accordingly. Ponding on roads could be a high possibility on Thursday.
