Arctic air is set to take a deep dive into the Southern United States. Millions of Americans will be impacted by these cooler temperatures. This cold outbreak is being driven by a strong upper-level low dipping southward from Canada, allowing frigid polar air to surge into the central and eastern portions of the country. This low will also help to drive multiple cold fronts across the country. There will be widespread subfreezing temperatures overnight, with many regions experiencing daytime highs that will struggle to climb above the freezing mark.&nbsp;In some areas, temperatures could run 20 to 30 degrees below average, especially across the Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes region. Tuesday's lows will plummet into the 20s, 30s, and 40s all the way to the Central Gulf Coast States and Florida. Numerous frost and freeze alerts will be issued ahead of the coldest air - protect sensitive plants.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 172428-1762820674019.png">Farther south, the cold air will bring the season’s first frost and freeze to areas that typically remain mild into late fall. The combination of Arctic high pressure and strong cold advection will make the air feel even colder, with wind chill values dipping into the single digits in northern states.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 172444-1762820693215.png">In addition to freeze warnings, cold weather advisories have been issued across Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 172601-1762820764873.png">This early blast of winter is a reminder that the transition from autumn to winter can happen abruptly when large-scale atmospheric patterns align. People should prepare by checking heating systems, protecting exposed pipes, and dressing in multiple insulating layers to guard against hypothermia and frostbite. The lake effect snow season has arrived, with heavy snow expected now through Tuesday. Places in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan have already received a foot of snow! <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 054716-1762778844004.jpg"> Winter weather alerts remain in place all across the shores of the Great Lakes through Tuesday. An additional 6-12" in some locations, with heavy snowfall rates likely reducing visibility at times, will make travel very difficult.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 172942-1762820987681.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 173144-1762821126773.png"><h1>How Lake Effect Works</h1>Water has a much higher heat capacity than air, meaning it takes more time to warm up and cool down. This leads to "mild" water temperatures in the Great Lakes while the air overhead can be much cooler. As the cold, dry air moves over these areas, it's able to evaporate moisture from the lakes until it condenses into clouds and precipitation before falling out over land. Typically, we need at least a 13° F difference between the lake water and the air aloft (around 1500 m, or 4500-5000 ft) for lake effect snow to form.<h1>Forecast</h1>With winds coming over the Great Lakes overnight, we can still anticipate lake effect snowfall to continue. Next, a quick-moving clipper will move through to bring a few wintry bands to the snowbelt.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/11-10_rne-1762821068070.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Travel impacts are expected, especially along the I-90 corridor, where major impacts are possible in NW Indiana. Lake Effect Snow Slamming the Great Lakes and Northeast

If it hasn't been wet, it's been warm out West. This week looks no different as our good friend, an Upper Level Ridge, will continue to sit on top of us. That will keep the quiet weather around, but will start to push temperatures into historic levels today and tomorrow. Plenty of records fell closing out the weekend from California to Arizona.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 201032-1762830639778.png">Temperatures look to run above average through Wednesday for a lot of our southwestern cities.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 172730-1762820855732.png">Any time high pressure sets up somewhere in the Great Basin or Four Corners, there could be offshore flow, winds blowing from the desert to the Pacific Ocean. When that happens, those winds are much warmer and drier as they cross up and over the San Gabriels and San Bernardinos.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 172824-1762820909165.png">There is some good news in all of this: it's a short-lived snap of hot weather. Ahead of the front, warm temperatures and plenty of moisture has kept the severe threat going overnight.The Storm Prediction Center has kept a severe weather threat at a MARGINAL (level 1 out of 5) risk for Florida into the overnight and dies down into Monday morning to be met with cold cold air behind.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-09 175721-1762736328951.png">

A system has been bringing snow across the Plains and Midwest on Saturday. This same system will continue to push through the Great Lakes into Sunday morning. Some areas have already seen some snow accumulation in the last 24 hours.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/pic6-1762642526724.png">Moderate rainfall and lighter snow will continue to drift east with the low-pressure system into Saturday night and Sunday morning. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/FORECAST-1762633208979.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Winds &amp; Temperatures</h1>Afternoon highs will struggle to warm out of the 30s for most areas impacted by the precipitation. Keep in mind, another feature of quick systems like these is gusty winds. Midwest Clipper Brings Light Snow, Gusty Winds

Secondary severe weather season is underway across the U.S. - so called because it typically pales in comparison to the primary severe weather season in the spring. However, the fall can provide high-end severe weather threats of its own, including the December 2021 tornado outbreak. Thankfully, the severe weather setup for now through Sunday doesn't look to be on the high-end, but a few scattered severe storms will be possible.<hr><h1>Severe Storm Outlooks/Hazards</h1>Early morning severe storms will be possible along the cold front driving south. Large hail and damaging winds will be possible with any severe storms and the severe risk should diminish by sunrise.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/PIC 2-1762564233131.jpg">The threat for isolated severe storms will continue Saturday into Sunday as the cold front is dragged through the south. Severe Storms Possible from Ohio to the Gulf Coast Friday and Saturday

A series of atmospheric rivers has been responsible for wet, windy, and snowy weather in the northwestern U.S over the last few weeks. Our system is currently moving through Washington, Oregon, and the northern tier of California, bringing heavy rainfall and snow. Above is the forecast rainfall totals for the next several days. Gold Beach in Oregon has already picked up 2.51" of rainfall in the past 24 hours.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Web1-1762440546220.png">With multiple inches of rain on the way, the Weather Prediction Center is monitoring coastal areas at a level 1, MARGINAL, risk for excessive rainfall that may lead to flash flooding.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-05 095854-1762361963192.png"><h2>Timing</h2>Precipitation across the Northwest should continue for the next few hours. Conditions will slowly improve Friday into the weekend before we gear up for the next round of Pacific moisture next week. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/New Baron Video 3-1762471781966.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Snow</h1>As some of that moisture makes its way into the higher elevation mountains, it will likely mean heavy snow for the mountains. Sometimes there may not be a sure bet on who will win the Kentucky Derby, but this year's odds on rain are just about a lock!

Expect rain to be falling at post time, scheduled for 6:50 p.m. Eastern Saturday. With recent rainy conditions and more forecast, the track should be quite muddy. The rain will be due to a slow-moving area of low pressure traversing the Ohio River Valley region. The latest forecast is showing the rain to get heavier through the afternoon hours Saturday. Our only hope for drier weather is if the rain will move out and finish sooner, rather than later.

Even around the post time for the Kentucky Derby Saturday, it still looks quite wet. All of that yellow and orange shows the heavy rain. Right now, 0.50-1.00" of rain is forecast on just Saturday alone! The heaviest time frame for rain will be between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday. Wind will be light.
