Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. Our next clipper system is set to move through the High Plains on Thursday. With temperatures taking a bit of a break from intense cold, this system will move through some warmer air, and that may lead to a rain/snow mix and potentially some freezing rain. The National Weather Service has issued winter alerts from Montana through Minnesota, with a few counties under winter storm warnings and one in South Dakota under an ice storm warning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 183527-1765416978621.png">As is typical with clipper systems, snowfall totals are often smaller, but sometimes the smaller totals lead to worse roads. In fact, 75% of accidents happen when there is less than 2" of snowfall, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. Here's a look at our forecasted totals with snow and ice from the High Plains through the Midwest.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 183632-1765417011977.png">Forecast models suggest about one-tenth of an inch of ice across portions of northwest Iowa, southwest Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota through Thursday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 183641-1765417019653.png">The clipper system drops in on Thursday morning, bringing snow for northern North Dakota and Minnesota, and potential ice into southern North Dakota and South Dakota. This system moves through quickly and heads towards the Midwest, but lingering moisture and snowfall continue behind this as cool air falls in behind the front. Strong upper-level ridging off the coast of California is currently dominating the weather pattern, bringing widespread sunshine but also a lack of precipitation. The one exception is in the state's Central Valley, where locked-in fog has kept temperatures chilly and skies gray. More on that in a minute...<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 131930-1765398197848.png">High pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere means sinking, compressing air, and generally warmer temperatures. On Tuesday, multiple record high temperatures were set, including 84° in Anaheim! <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 132558-1765398582761.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 132733-1765398466041.png">High temperature records up and down the western third of the country could fall through the weekend, as the upper-level ridge is forecasted to stubbornly remain in place over the coming days! <h1>Tule Fog</h1>You may have noticed the persistent fog in the Central Valley, or even the much colder temperatures compared to the rest of the state. This fog is known as Tule (TOO-lee) Fog, and is somewhat common in the winter months. It's a radiational fog that occurs overnight, gets locked into the Central Valley (sometimes the Bay Area), and is beneficial to California's agricultural industry. However, with high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere not going anywhere lately, the Tule Fog has been incredibly persistent. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 134007-1765399214088.png">The fog is making a huge difference in temperatures! Early Wednesday afternoon, Bakersfield was sitting under gray skies and a temperature of 42°. At the same time, over the Grapevine and into the valleys, temperatures were pushing into the upper 80s with blue skies!

Record Warmth Out West, Except for California's Central Valley

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

The Northern Tier of the country is no stranger to cold, and Tuesday morning proved that with multiple record lows. Watertown, New York, saw a morning low of -18°. This beat out the old record of -16° in 2008. Temperatures on Wednesday have been quite mild and will be for most of Thursday before cooling behind a clipper system Thursday night.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/12-10 rnc bams3k overnight-1765417374022.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Another Blast Of Cold Air</h1>Temperatures rebound for a day or two, with more dangerously cold weather expected at the end of the week and into the weekend. Temperatures will be 30° BELOW average for some, as this arctic air invades the Northern Plain and Northeast.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 041854-1765365546543.png">Low temperatures Friday through Sunday will drop below zero for many. Minneapolis on Sunday morning is expected to drop all the way to -13 degrees.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 184524-1765417544840.png">High temperatures across the Great Lakes won't even make it to 20 degrees for cities like Chicago over the weekend.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 184535-1765417553255.png">Stay warm and stay tuned to WeatherNation for the latest details. Here Comes Another Push of Arctic Air

NORTHWEST - An atmospheric river aimed at the northwest has been responsible for rainfall totals of over a foot across the northwest. Even as rain starts to slow down into early Thursday, the rivers will still remain high through the end of the week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 114305-1765392214647.png">With this event being so warm, significant flooding remains likely for the higher terrain of the Cascades, in addition to lower elevations. Flood Watches remain in place for Washington, Idaho, and Montana through Friday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 150403-1765404249718.png">As all of the moisture adds up and runs off into creeks, streams, and rivers, water levels will rise dramatically through the middle of the week. Many rivers are expected to reach moderate to major flood stages, including the Snoqualmie and Snohomish. Landslides will remain a risk, as a few have already occurred across the northwest.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1998497888079368241" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1998497888079368241"></div>As this moisture moves east and hits colder air in the Rockies, more of the rain will turn to heavy snow. Temperatures will continue to climb, leading to higher and higher snowfall levels. A break arrives through Thursday. Another weaker system is expected on Friday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/12-10_rnw_bams3k overnight-1765417272963.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h3>River Flooding</h3>Once the rain slows down, rivers will still be running high. The Skagit River near Mount Vernon is forecast to reach major flood stage into early Thursday morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 174305-1765413802847.png">Many of the rivers in the northwest are expected to reach moderate to major flood stage through the end of the week (top of page). Snow levels will go up and down quite a bit through the event, so driving over mountain passes in the afternoons may yield only rain at times, while at other times, intense snow is expected. River Flooding Threat Remains Possible for Northwest

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

AAA expects an increase in travelers compared to last year, 2024. The forecast calls for 119.7 million travelers, which is a 2.2% increase from 2024.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 151722-1765405796099.png">Traveling by car is the favorite for the holidays. AAA notes gas prices, on average, are also down in comparison to 2024.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 151733-1765406300348.png">Air travel is also up since 2024 by 2.3%. AAA expects 8.03 million people to be traveling to their destinations for the holidays via airplane. NORTHEAST - The northeastern U.S. is in for some wintry weather over the course of the week, with a couple of clipper systems dropping down from the northern Plains. The clippers continue with a fast-moving clipper system that will move out of the Upper Midwest and into the interior of the Northeast on Wednesday. This system will bring a brief but disruptive round of winter weather to several states. As the system pushes east, a wide swath of Winter Weather Advisories and Warnings is issued across the Interior Northeast and the higher elevations of the Appalachians. Snowfall totals across this region&nbsp;will range from 4 to 6 inches.&nbsp;<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/12-09_rne-1765403705611.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>One of the most significant impacts will come from a corridor of Blizzard Warnings in the Central Appalachians. In this region, snow accumulations of three to six inches combined with wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour will create dangerous whiteout conditions and severely reduced visibility. Travel will be extremely difficult to nearly impossible at times, as blowing snow-coated roads and obscured sight lines will be possible.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 040825-1765364957335.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 145530-1765403760115.png">Farther north, Snowfall totals will be even heavier in the snowbelts, where lake effect snowfall is expected to pick up throughout the week. Communities across the Tug Hill Plateau and the western Adirondacks can pick up up between 8 and 16 inches of snow, continuing an active stretch of winter weather for upstate New York.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 113556-1765391765064.png">Winds will be a problem for visibility late Wednesday into Thursday as the front moves through. Widespread 30-40 mph gusts are expected.Another clipper is forecast to track quickly behind it on Thursday, threatening parts of the Northern High Plains and the Ohio Valley with a mix of heavy snow and pockets of freezing rain. In anticipation, Winter Storm Watches are already issued in eastern Montana, signaling the potential for another round of hazardous travel and wintry disruptions.&nbsp;Be cautious because the air will turn cold later this week in places that receive rain from these clippers, while the roads remain wet, black ice could be a problem at the end of the week.

DENVER, CO - Denver saw its first significant snow this season earlier this week, with 6.5 inches reported downtown! The highest totals were reported in the higher elevations, with 11 inches recorded in Genesee.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-04 095720-1764867453909.png"><h1>Forecast Snow</h1>Further snow is in store for the Rocky Mountains as a frontal system dives in. Precipitation began in northern Utah Friday evening and will spread across Colorado overnight and into Saturday morning. Another round of snow is likely for the weekend with higher moisture content coming from the Northwest.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-05 202547-1764991557250.png"><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/rockieswnoww-1764991689293.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>With today's round and our late-week round, snowfall totals may reach upwards of a foot plus in the higher elevations.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-05 202838-1764991729249.png">This snowfall is more than welcome for some of the ski resorts in the Rockies. Oh, here we snow again!

Snow is in the forecast for this Saturday across the Ohio River Valley. Parts of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky could measure 3 to 6 inches of snow through Saturday night.
