<p>The lake effect snow season has arrived, with heavy snow expected now through Tuesday. Early Sunday, the snow was just starting to stack up. Places on the Upper Penninsula of Michigan have surpassed a foot of snow already!<br><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 054716-1762778844004.jpg"><br><br><strong>Winter weather alerts</strong> have been issued all across the shores of the Great Lakes through Tuesday. Snow in these areas could top 8-12" in some locations, with heavy snowfall rates likely reducing visibility at times, making travel very difficult.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 054842-1762778933145.jpg"></p><h1>How Lake Effect Works</h1><p>Water has a much higher heat capacity than air, meaning it takes more time to warm up and cool down. This leads to "mild" water temperatures in the Great Lakes while the air overhead can be much cooler. As the cold, dry air moves over these areas, it's able to evaporate moisture from the lakes until it condenses into clouds and precipitation before falling out over land. Typically, we need at least a 13° F difference between the lake water and the air aloft (around 1500 m, or 4500-5000 ft) for lake effect snow to form. This weekend, the difference will be close to 35-45°!</p><h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-08 060323-1762608655882.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-08 060332-1762608670553.png">Forecast</h1><p>As the winds shift slightly from the NNE into Monday, Chicago could see some intense lake effect snow drift over downtown from the lakeshore. This is completely dependent on a shortwave around the upper-level low providing those NNE winds, so if that shifts a bit, Chicago may get missed. Other areas more certain to see some heavy accumulations include locations on the SSE sides of the lakes, and on the SE side of Lake Ontario. Winds shift back to the North and NW by Monday, bringing the heavier snow into Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/11-09_rne-1762736027472.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Impacts to travel can be expected, especially along the I-90 corridor where major impacts are possible in NW Indiana. Lake Effect Snow Slamming the Great Lakes

<p>Arctic air is set to take a deep dive into the Southern United States. Millions of Americans will be impacted by these cooler temperatures into the work week. This cold outbreak is being driven by a strong upper-level low dipping southward from Canada, allowing frigid polar air to surge into the central and eastern portions of the country. This low will also help to drive multiple cold fronts across the country. There will be widespread subfreezing temperatures overnight, with many regions experiencing daytime highs that will struggle to climb above the freezing mark.<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">&nbsp;</span></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-08 072835-1762612121598.jpg"></p><p>In some areas, temperatures could run 20 to 30 degrees below average, especially across the Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes region.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 054417-1762778669619.jpg">Monday and Tuesday's lows will plummet into the 20s, 30s, and 40s all the way to the Central Gulf Coast States and Florida. Numerous frost and freeze alerts will be issued ahead of the coldest air - protect sensitive plants.</p><p></p><p>Farther south, the cold air will bring the season’s first frost and freeze to areas that typically remain mild into late fall. The combination of Arctic high pressure and strong cold advection will make the air feel even colder, with wind chill values dipping into the single digits in northern states.<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">&nbsp;</span></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 054511-1762778717972.jpg"></p><p>This early blast of winter is a reminder that the transition from autumn to winter can happen abruptly when large-scale atmospheric patterns align. People should prepare by checking heating systems, protecting exposed pipes, and dressing in multiple insulating layers to guard against hypothermia and frostbite. Arctic Blast Sends Temperatures Plummeting for Millions

<p>If it hasn't been wet, it's been warm out West. This week looks no different as our good friend, an Upper Level Ridge, will continue to sit on top of us. That will keep the quiet weather around, but will start to push temperatures into historic levels today and tomorrow. Plenty of records fell closing out the weekend from California to Arizona. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 055028-1762779056800.jpg">We've been struggling to find many who will complain openly about the 70s and 80s around the Intermountain West, or even the low 90s around Phoenix. It's in southern California, where people might have a different reaction to 90 in the forecast, because they know what that could mean: wildfire danger.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-09 080534-1762700911315.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/HEATY HEA-1762736244587.png">Any time high pressure sets up somewhere in the Great Basin or Four Corners, there could be offshore flow, winds blowing from the desert to the Pacific Ocean. When that happens, those winds are much warmer and drier as they cross up and over the San Gabriels and San Bernardinos. The Storm Prediction Center is highlighting areas just north of LA with an ELEVATED risk for wildfire growth today, but it hasn't risen to the level of a Red Flag Warning.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-10 055040-1762779046174.jpg">There is some good news in all of this: it's a short-lived snap of hot weather. By Tuesday and Wednesday, the breezy winds will back off, and that should help temperatures settle closer to normal for this time of year. Warm Weather Sticks Around the West

Ahead of the front, warm temperatures and plenty of moisture has kept the severe threat going overnight.</p><p>The Storm Prediction Center has kept a severe weather threat at a <strong>MARGINAL</strong> (level 1 out of 5) risk for Florida into the overnight and dies down into Monday morning to be met with cold cold air behind.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-09 175721-1762736328951.png"></p>

Severe Threat Ending With Florida

<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

<p>A system has been bringing snow across the Plains and Midwest on Saturday. This same system will continue to push through the Great Lakes into Sunday morning. Midwest Clipper Brings Light Snow, Gusty Winds

<p>Secondary severe weather season is underway across the U.S. - so called because it <em>typically</em> pales in comparison to the primary severe weather season in the spring. However, the fall can provide high-end severe weather threats of its own, including the December 2021 tornado outbreak.<br><br>Thankfully, the severe weather setup for now through Sunday doesn't look to be on the high-end, but a few scattered severe storms will be possible.</p><hr><h1>Severe Storm Outlooks/Hazards</h1><p>Early morning severe storms will be possible along the cold front driving south. Large hail and damaging winds will be possible with any severe storms and the severe risk should diminish by sunrise.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/PIC 2-1762564233131.jpg"></p><p>The threat for isolated severe storms will continue Saturday into Sunday as the cold front is dragged through the south. Severe Storms Possible from Ohio to the Gulf Coast Friday and Saturday

<p>A series of atmospheric rivers has been responsible for wet, windy, and snowy weather in the northwestern U.S over the last few weeks. Our system is currently moving through Washington, Oregon, and the northern tier of California, bringing heavy rainfall and snow. Above is the forecast rainfall totals for the next several days. Gold Beach in Oregon has already picked up 2.51" of rainfall in the past 24 hours.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Web1-1762440546220.png"></p><p>With multiple inches of rain on the way, the Weather Prediction Center is monitoring coastal areas at a level 1, <strong>MARGINAL</strong>, risk for excessive rainfall that may lead to flash flooding.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/11/Screenshot 2025-11-05 095854-1762361963192.png"></p><p></p><h2>Timing</h2><p>Precipitation across the Northwest should continue for the next few hours. Next Big Push of Moisture in the Northwest

A cold front sweeping across the Southern United States will bring more severe storms chances today to areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia.  Large hail and damaging winds will be the main weather risks, but some rotation will be possible for a few tornadoes as well.

A Slight risk of severe weather has been issued for areas of Alabama and Georgia.  This does include Montgomery and Atlanta.  All modes of severe weather will be in play today.
