Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

<p>Alright, this weekend was brutal! If you didn't feel the cold, you for sure heard stories as a massive Winter storm moved across the Nation impacting 40 states. A story that will be remembered. As the storm system itself moves out of the lower 48 today, here is the kicker... another low brings a reinforcing shot of cold to areas trying to clean up and restore power after this weekend. Temperatures have been breaking records left and right. Monday morning was no different!</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Web1-1769508882194.png"></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-26 160434-1769468679754.png"><strong>Cold Alerts </strong>are in place through Wednesday, as cold air continues to impact a large portion of the country.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/pola-1769538798294.png">Wednesday morning, temperatures will remain cold, just not as cold.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-27 081604-1769526975988.png">Temperatures in New York City will drop to 11° on Wednesday morning, with wind chills feeling below zero.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-27 081608-1769526981370.png">Farther south, temperatures will stay below freezing for several days. This will bring delays to any improvements due to the winter storm.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-27 081635-1769527001172.png"></p><p>This cool air is expected to make its way down to southern Florida as well! In the Tampa Bay area, your forecast lows will have you waking up in the mid-30s by Wednesday. Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. <p><strong>ABOVE - </strong>Up to one inch of ice accumulated across parts of Mississippi, Tennessee, and Louisiana, weighing down power lines and transmission equipment and causing widespread outages. As of Tuesday afternoon, roughly 500,000 customers remain without power. The threat continues with dangerously cold overnight lows expected throughout the week.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/as of tuesday -1769540170174.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/as of tuesday 555-1769540177676.png">The impacts of this storm are expected to linger throughout the rest of the week. With power still out, many are still in danger as cold temperatures pose a serious risk. Lows are expected to remain well below freezing each night, increasing concerns for hypothermia, frozen pipes, and additional infrastructure damage.</p><p></p><h3>Wintry Precipitation Totals</h3><p>Snow started Friday in the South before switching over to sleet and ice on Saturday with our first round of precipitation. Our top snowfall totals maxed out around a foot for cities such as Little Rock, Arkansas.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-26 171858-1769473186656.png">Sleet altered the forecast a bit for some, with up to 5 inches reported in cities such as Catholic Point, Arkansas.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-26 172017-1769473290101.png">In the Midwest, cities like Indianapolis, Indiana, received over 10 inches of snowfall from this storm.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-26 171920-1769473316826.png">In the northeast, this was a snow-only event. Over Half a Million Without Power From Winter Storm

<p>Copy and paste has been used a lot by forecasters this Winter. A nearly permanent feature of the upper-level pattern has been parked in southern Canada, keeping the eastern half of the country chilly if not dangerously cold. That has kept the threat of wintery weather close by - this weekend might tap into it.</p><h1>SETUP</h1><p>This is a little different than the most recent whallop of snow. Instead of a few waves of a mixed bag of precipitation types, this will be a strong but quickly developing storm system. Making it tougher to forecast. Where and when this storm develops will hold all of the details as to how far inland some of these threats will reach. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-27 103059-1769535073441.png"></p><h1>IMPACTS</h1><p>This system will bring a threat of heavy snow for areas along the Mid-Atlantic coast. That includes North Carolina and Virginia over the coming days. Some models are eager to pick up the snowfall amounts. While the possibility is certainly there, more goes into this forecast. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-27 102930-1769535003133.png">With the snowfall forecast still up in the air, it's better to focus on safer bets that will be part of the equation. Wind. With a quickly deepening cyclone, a wide wind field is expected, with some wind gusts approaching 60-70 mph. Will the system be close enough to the coast to bring some of those inland? </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-27 103303-1769535196369.png">Is there a chance this turns into a monster on us? Sure. Is there a chance this develops too late and too east to be a threat at all? Sure. Stay up to date with the latest forecast as details become more and more clear.</p><p></p>

Another Weekend Snow on the East Coast?

<p>We're making a run at two straight weeks without measurable rain. That's an impressive stretch for most, but especially the Pacific Northwest! But like we saw a few weeks ago, we're getting back into a wet pattern out west, with multiple shots at rain and snow.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-26 113042-1769452738892.png">As with most repeated rounds of rain, flash flooding will be a concern. Thankfully, this will only target the Olympic Peninsula. Rain Finally Makes a Return to the Northwest

<p>WOOF! The Northeast got rocked over the weekend with some heavy snow! Snowfall totals reached from 20"-30" across portions of the Northeast. Snow Continues for the Great Lakes, Northeast

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

<p>While much of the country will be <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/Rare%20Winter%20Storm%20Threatens%20Over%20130%20Million">impacted by wintry weather</a>, a small portion of the south will be impacted by severe storms today! Portions of Florida and Georgia are feeling the warmth, and this warm air mass will collide with the advancing cold front, bringing severe thunderstorm risks through Sunday night. Several severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings have already been issued.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/0125-1769380916039.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>With enough instability, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) is issuing a large Slight risk (level 2 out of 5) for severe weather through Sunday. Strong winds and tornadoes remain possible.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-25 153954-1769380799364.png">Heavy rain will also be a factor as these storms move through. Our model data shows swaths of heavy rain across Mississippi and Alabama. Severe Thunderstorms Possible Across the South on Sunday

<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

<p>For much of this winter season, the Southwestern United States has been under the influence of a large, blocking ridge of high pressure. This ridge has sent storms well to the north, keeping the southwest dry and warm. While a few soaking systems helped push drought conditions out of California, the Four Corners have been seeing drought conditions worsen with snow pack rivaling the worst on record (snow pack records date back about 40 years).</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-22 130618-1769112396676.png">A wet storm system has moved in from the Pacific bringing heavy rain and snow back to these parched locations. <strong>Winter weather alerts</strong> remain in place for portions of New Mexico and Arizona lasting through Sunday morning.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web1-1769341115291.png"></p><p>The worst of this low is definitely behind us by Sunday morning rainfall-wise. What's left is some residual snowfall that'll bring some decent totals across New Mexico throughout the day.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/2026-01-25 06-38-54-1769341154993.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Some totals will still measure close to 6" in some areas like near Alamogordo, New Mexico. Rainfall totals still may reach half an inch in some spots in southern Arizona and New Mexico.
