In the West, temperatures have been extremely warm, while the East feels the repetitive shots of cold air, fresh from the Canadian Arctic. Now, as our pattern begins to shift, many people will feel the shift from bitterly cold temperatures to a more spring-like feel. Records began falling by Friday afternoon, with Sioux City, IA, and Sioux Falls, SD, pushing into the 60s!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1770952988405.png">Upper-level high pressure will strengthen and build northward as we wrap up the week. This will begin to shove the arctic air back to the north and allow a significant warm-up from the Gulf to the Canadian border.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 172148-1771028517583.png">Cities such as Sioux Falls, Minneapolis, and Chicago, which felt temperatures well below 0° for a good chunk of January, will suddenly feel temperatures that are more typical of April.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 172225-1771028552096.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 172243-1771028575806.png">With daytime highs that will push 30° above-average, record highs will be possible through Monday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 172415-1771028661894.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 172436-1771028683157.png">The southern Plains will also be feeling the anomalous warmth, helping to increase the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/active-weather-weekend-ahead">severe weather threat</a> there over the next couple of days. Confidence is very high in spring-like warmth sticking around as we head deeper into February. The chance for thunderstorms in a more spring-like pattern will continue along with it!

Meteorologist Jesse Kelley is excited to join the talented staff at Weather Nation. Jesse spent most of his childhood in Birmingham, Alabama. The state of Alabama is prone to seeing various types of weather from severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and winter weather. For college, Jesse attended the University of South Alabama where he received his degree in Broadcast Meteorology along with minors in Math and Geography. From Alabama, Jesse started his broadcast television working three years at KAVU-TV in Victoria. Recently, he finished a stint in Shreveport, LA. By late Saturday, the next Pacific low will aim for California and the southwest to start a train of systems that will soak parts of the SW for a good portion of next week.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/02-11_Rsw setup-1770863078525.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Winter Storm Watches are now up for parts of California for several feet of snow into midweek. Travel could be impossible in some spots with the high snowfall rates and winds next week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1771025282026.png">On the rainfall side, heavy rain could be a talker for coastal California from the Bay region down into SoCal.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/New Baron Video 3-1771025449661.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The forecast shows the rain starting to pick up in Northern California late Saturday into Sunday. As the upper low slowly slides east, the precipitation will expand down to Los Angeles and San Diego along the front Monday. Rain and snow looks likely off and on into Thursday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/New Baron Video 3-1771025705770.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Totals are likely to change, but we wanted to show you how much models are projecting to give you an idea of how much moisture is expected with this next system into next week. We'll continue to fine-tune the forecast and give you a better idea of how much rain and snow are expected as we head towards the weekend.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1png-1771024984981.png">Long-range models keep confidence in above-average precipitation, which, for the southwest, is great to see.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1771025759653.png">

Heavy Moisture Returns to California Next Week

ROCKIES - A trough will move onshore on Friday, ushering much-needed rain and snow on Friday and Saturday. As moisture moves in from the Pacific and interacts with colder air in place, higher elevations across Colorado, New Mexico, and parts of Utah and Arizona can expect accumulating snowfall.Mountain passes will likely see the greatest impacts, where periods of steady snow will lead to reduced visibility and snow-covered roads on this busy holiday weekend.&nbsp;A few Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for parts of New Mexico and Colorado.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 113635-1771007807488.png">Lower elevations will miss out on snow for this system, but temperatures there are expected to be warmer. That means many lower elevation locations may start as rain before transitioning to a rain-snow mix, especially during the overnight and early morning hours when temperatures are coolest. While snowfall totals in lower elevations should remain lighter, bursts of heavier precipitation could briefly coat roadways and create slushy conditions.&nbsp;<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/New Baron Video 3-1771024331742.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Snowfall amounts will be measured in the feet, which could help put a dent in the sizeable deficit facing many states (above). By the time Saturday rolls around, many areas will at least pick up 12 inches, with much more possible. Travel will be treacherous, especially going up to the ski resorts over the next few days.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 113657-1771007828909.png">Beyond travel concerns, the storm will also provide beneficial moisture to a region that has been struggling with dry conditions as of late. Snowpack gains in the mountains are especially important for water supply heading into spring. As the system pushes east, drier air returns, allowing skies to gradually clear and temperatures to rise.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 113734-1771007868121.png">Stay tuned to WeatherNation for the latest updates.

Rockies Receive Some Much-Needed Help

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

SOUTH - While it isn't spring yet, spring-like storms will return to the South and Southeast into the weekend. A strong low coming off the Southern Rockies will provide plenty of lift and shear to spawn severe storms, including tornadoes, and flash flood potential.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 062432-1770989126509.png">Strong storms kick off late Friday before pushing east into Saturday and Sunday. Severe storms are possible into Monday in Florida as the front continues to move through the region.<h2>Forecast Timing</h2>By evening, some stronger storms are likely to develop. These storms will continue moving with the surface front through the weekend. By Saturday morning, the front will still not have cleared the I-35 corridor, meaning some spots in Texas and Oklahoma may become susceptible to flooding. By Saturday night, storms will start to organize along the frontal boundary and push eastward. It won't be until Sunday that these storms move east of the Mississippi River Valley and into the Deep South, potentially disrupting weekend plans.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/New Baron Video 3-1771023870658.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Tornado Threat</h2>Hail is being highlighted as the primary threat for Friday's storms, along with flood potential, but by Saturday, wind shear and instability should increase enough to lead to damaging winds and a few tornadoes. This threat will likely continue into Sunday as storms push farther east.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-13 114133-1771008111184.png"><h2>Flooding Threat</h2>Current forecast models show localized areas receiving 3-5 inches of rainfall, with isolated higher totals possible. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1771023917773.png">The Weather Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT RISK for heavy rainfall across portions of Arkansas on Saturday, which may lead to flash flooding. A MARGINAL RISK is in effect for Friday from Kansas into Texas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1771024026785.png">On Sunday, excessive rainfall outlooks continue into the Southeast, where portions of the Carolinas, Florida, and Georgia remain under a Level 1, MARGINAL RISK for flash flooding.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/1-1771024082234.png">Be sure to join us on WeatherNation as we track this system's development!

Multi-Day Severe Weather Threat Targets the South

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

NORTHEAST - As this next clipper system continues through, we can see snow and some lake-effect snow. A high-pressure system will move in, and things will taper off on Thursday night.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/02-11_rne-1770838643023.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>When all is said and done, the heaviest snow ends up in upstate New York and most of the New England area. With a few of these lake effect bands cranking well into late week, we can see some totals top out at 6"!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-11 123841-1770838732760.png">But what about those temps after the fact? Well, judging by the Climate Prediction Center's (CPC) 6-10 day outlook, we're likely to continue with these above-average temperatures even after Valentine's Day weekend. Lingering Snow in the Northeast

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

It was another cold morning on Monday across the Northeast. Many cities across the Northeast hit below zero for the air temperature! Dubois, PA broke its record low temperature for the morning, getting down to -9°.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 081947-1770650390845.png">There will be some improvement with overnight lows getting closer to seasonal by midweek.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 174938-1770684583296.png"><h1>Where does this year's cold rank?</h1>While it has been a cold winter, many colder winters have occurred in the history of weather observations in the Eastern U.S. Most of these areas have weather data dating back to the 1800s, so ranking in the bottom half or even bottom quarter is still impressive.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-06 094753-1770397848980.png">As we look ahead, temperatures will remain below average. Cold Air Remains Across the Northeast

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. It was a hot day on Monday, February 9th in the Central Plains with many locations breaking record high temperatures for this date in time. Some of these locations include spots like Sioux City, Iowa, which not only broke a daily record high, but they also had their warmest temperatures this early in the year.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 174203-1770684273700.png">Temperatures are expected to drop on Tuesday but they'll still be above-average across the northern Plains.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 135952-1770671000646.png">The warming temperatures will mean impacts from melting snow and ice, particularly where ice jams become a hazard. A flood watch remains in effect for eastern Nebraska for ice jam flood potential.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/02/Screenshot 2026-02-09 140356-1770671044246.png">Another side-effect of the warmer weather is wildfire concerns. As winds kick up to 20-30 mph, areas of eastern New Mexico and the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas need to be mindful of grass fire ignitions. Anything that gets going could spread quickly, as dry as this area has been recently. Hurricane Walaka is currently a category 4 hurricane. Winds are around 155 mph, and it is continuing on its north track at 10 mph. Walaka will stay on the strong side until Friday morning where it will weaken to a category 1 hurricane.

Although Walaka is staying to the west of the Hawaiian islands, it will still have an impact on Hawaii. Wave heights will increase over the next couple of days, and rain from the outskirts of the storm could hit the western islands of Hawaii.
