Severe weather has been easy to find it feels like over the past few weeks. It's in places you would typically expect, from the southern plains to the Deep South. Our next threat roars onshore Wednesday, which could bring severe thunderstorms to....THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST??<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-25 061056-1742904665726.jpg">That's right, areas around Seattle and Portland could be looking down a risk for damaging winds and large hail as storms develop Wednesday afternoon. So what's causing this?<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-25 062620-1742905628962.jpg">A powerhouse system will spin onshore, but it's coming on the heels of record-warm temperatures. That combination typically doesn't happen up here, especially not this early. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a MARGINAL risk of severe weather that includes Seattle, Portland, and Spokane. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-25 062633-1742906203239.jpg">Storms look to get going in the afternoon and could bring large hail and damaging winds as they lift north. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/2025-03-25 06-40-55-1742906481015.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Heavy rainfall could lead to additional flooding in the Pacific Northwest. Rare Severe Threat Visits the Northwest

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

A strong area of high pressure has taken over the West, which means warm-to-hot temperatures are in effect for this portion of the country. Record warmth is in full swing, and multiple records were broken today through the Southwest. Riverside, CA tied the previous record high with 94°. Phoenix and Yuma, Arizona beat out previous records as both cities saw highs today in the upper 90s. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/CA REC-1742865540918.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/AZ RECORD-1742865547568.png">Over the next few days, the West is on track to see dozens of records tied or broken. Here's a look at where records can be broken for Tuesday through Thursday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/recod-1742865759652.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>These record-breaking temperatures can be especially impactful early in the season when a lot of people are not yet used to the heat. The Heat Risk is expected to reach a moderate level (2 out of 4) on Tuesday, expected to be the warmest day for many in the deserts.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-24 055002-1742817192809.jpg"><h1>Forecast Highs</h1>Areas in the Sonoran Desert (Phoenix, Palm Springs, Yuma) are expected to reach the upper 90s and could surpass 100° early in the week. The earliest day in the year on record for Phoenix to hit 100° or higher is March 26th, one day after peak high temperatures are expected in southern Arizona.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/southwestsss-1742865948369.png">The Pacific Northwest will see temperatures over 20 degrees above average for some. Cities in this region will climb into the 70s and a few in the 80s. Boise normally sees a high of 57°, but on Wednesday the forecast high is 81°! <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/nrorr-1742865960386.png">The Northern Rockies could see rapid snow melt through next week as high temperatures climb to more than 20° above average. Billings, Cheyenne, and Rapid City are all expected to climb into the 70s.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/rickckc-1742865968033.png">If you plan to spend time outdoors, especially when venturing farther away from cities on a hike or similar, be sure to bring plenty of water, take breaks in the shade, and wear loose, light-colored clothing.

NORTHWEST - Warmer air is forcing the rain/snow line (freezing level) in the Pacific Northwest and Northern Tier up to higher elevations. Rain and melting snow will increase the avalanche risk in the High Cascades, volcanoes, and mountains of British Columbia, Idaho, and Montana. These are sometimes referred to as 'wet avalanches'. The reduced flood risk could lead to low flow impacts on navigation and saltwater intrusion on the Lower Mississippi River during the late summer and fall. This is the fourth year in a row with this risk.Despite the overall reduced flood risk this spring, moderate flooding is expected in tributaries to the Lower Missouri River in Kansas and Missouri. This area typically experiences moderate flooding each spring, and despite the lack of snowpack, local antecedent conditions and typical spring rainfall will lead to the likelihood of moderate flooding on these tributaries.Current water supply forecasts in the western United States indicate much below normal conditions for the Desert Southwest due to below average snowpack.In Alaska, spring ice breakup and snowmelt flood risk is forecast to be above average for the Upper Yukon, Tanana, and Koyukuk River basins. Below average flood risk is expected in the Lower Yukon and Kuskokwim River basins, along with most of Southcentral Alaska.Based on the expected spring flood outlook, hypoxia development in the Gulf of America and Chesapeake Bay is projected to not deviate from seasonal normals. Hypoxic zones directly impact commercial and recreational fisheries."

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. NORTHEAST - Winter weather advisories have been winding down for the Great Lakes and Northeast, with a few lingering through Tuesday morning. Main and New Hampshire can still expect between 3-5" of snowfall and Michigan may see additional snow accumulations up to 3 inches.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-24 141657-1742847462231.png">You'll notice our forecast models aren't putting out a terrible amount of additional snowfall in these areas through tonight and into tomorrow morning but a few pesky lake effect bands across Michigan could still lead to slippery conditions for the evening drive tonight and morning drive tomorrow.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/11112222-1742866438372.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Snow will continue to taper off overnight.<h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-24 141701-1742847547734.png">Another Clipper</h2>Another system has dropped in from the Canadian Prairies today and will continue to bring minor precipitation totals for the northern Plains overnight. Very large hail has surfaced along our cold front from Texas through Kentucky from Sunday night. Hail upwards of 2.75" has come out of Sunday's storms from Texas through Alabama.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-24 100644-1742832577772.png">The SPC has removed the severe weather outlook along the Gulf Coast, and the rain is winding down. An isolated storm or two will be possible through the overnight hours.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/vcv-1742866554694.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Some heavy rain along the Gulf may lead to flooding, there is a MARGINAL (level 1 out of 4) risk that rainfall could exceed flash flooding guidance in the areas highlighted below.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-24 125453-1742842553239.png">Rainfall totals could surpass 1-3 inches in some locations, but a lot will be coming down in a short period of time. Heed any flash flood warnings, should they be issued later today.

Patrick Crawford has always been a huge weather buff! He grew up in Plano, Texas, and it was there that he experienced what Mother Nature was capable of doing. He would always turn on the television to see what local meteorologists were saying about the weather. That's when he realized he wanted to be a meteorologist.

Patrick graduated from Northern Illinois University (’04) with a degree in Meteorology and a double minor in Mathematics and Geography. Broadcast Meteorology has been great to him and he has been able to work in television markets all across the country. Some of his stops have included New Orleans, Green Bay and even Yuma, Arizona. He is so excited to be part of the WeatherNation team.

He has been awarded the prestigious CBM (Certified Broadcast Meteorologist) weather seal from the American Meteorological Society.

A surge of warmth is on the way to the Eastern U.S. over the next few days as a strong ridge of high pressure aloft moves into the region.  This means temperatures will climb well above normal and should stay that way through next week. Temperatures hit new records in several cities in the northeast on Saturday!
