WOOF! The Northeast got rocked over the weekend with some heavy snow! This is the biggest snow storm to impact the area in several years and we are adding the extreme cold on top of it! <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2015530118484046130" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2015530118484046130"></div>First off, WINTER STORM WARNINGS &amp; WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES remain in place across much of the east. Even areas where the wintery precip has wrapped up, icy roads with the bone chill will linger for the start of the week. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Web4-1769432279416.png">Behind the coldest air of the season this past weekend another clipper system is going to usher in more cold. This means most of the Eastern U.S. stays below average. As we have seen many times this season that cold air streams across the mostly open great lake waters continuing to fuel some lake effect snow. Snow Continues for the Great Lakes, Northeast

Alright this weekend was brutal! If you didn't feel the cold you for sure hear stories as a massive Winter storm moved across the Nation impacting 40 states. A story that will be remembered. As the storm system itself moves out of the lower 48 today, here is the kicker... another low brings a reinforcing shot of cold to areas trying to clean up and restore power after this weekend. <h1>The North</h1>Cold weather alerts continue to be in effect widespread Monday morning and for some this cold will last most of the week! <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/RV2-1769430726722.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Web3-1769431209058.png">It was cold enough to break records across the northern U.S., Saturday and Sunday &amp; by Monday AM wind chill values were dangerous once again being felt across the Northern Plains. Meteorologist Alana Cameron spoke to the National Weather Service in Duluth, MN, about the upcoming cold:<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8gzSxDH1u5I" start="0"></iframe></div>Wind chills will continue to be cold across the northeast on Monday morning, as well. Temperatures for Washington D.C. will feel like 8° Monday morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web3-1769423917341.png"><h1>The South</h1>This dangerous cold will also make its way into the southern United States. Cold weather alerts have been issued from Kansas through the Gulf Coast.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web4-1769424033417.png">The north may be more used to the colder air, but the south will also be experiencing dangerously cold temperatures. Some cities won't make it out of the single digits. Many will even stay below freezing for the next few days, making it more difficult for icy roadways to thaw out.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web6-1769424151949.png">Wind chill values Monday morning will drop below zero across many southern cities.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web5-1769424077830.png">Reminder to keep yourself bundled up to the max heading into the late week! Frostbite can occur in mere minutes when the wind chill values get below -42 degrees! Cold Holds,  Storm Clean-up Difficult

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

A rare winter storm has been impacting parts of the South, Midwest, and Northeast. It has brought a combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to areas that typically do not experience wintry precipitation. &nbsp;Winter Alerts are in place for this system as it continues to move through. Snowfall totals across the northeast have reached up to 20.0" inches in portions of Pennsylvania, and more snow will be possible through Tuesday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web1-1769422840564.png"><h1>Forecast Timing</h1>This system is now moving to the Northeast and will bring periods of heavy rain. The low will lift through Monday, and by Tuesday, most should be clear except in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and portions of New York. Please use caution if traveling.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/2026-01-26 05-21-41-1769422928586.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Forecast Ice</h1>The south has already seen freezing rain and snow, impacting travel, and now we are seeing impacts across portions of the Carolinas and Virginia. By Monday morning, some more light ice accumulation is possible throughout the day. Totals will likely not get too much higher than .1".<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web1-1769423290323.png"><h1>Forecast Snow &amp; Sleet</h1>Areas around New England are set to see the heaviest of the snow. However, a lot of the north east is expected to see snow throughout your Monday. The heaviest totals could measure up to 4"-5" in some cases. This on top of the feet of snow already on the ground in some areas, could pose tricky travel conditions. Make sure to give yourself a little extra time if you're hitting the roadways, although if you can avoid it, please do so.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web2-1769423323353.png">For More on this system, tune into our eastern regional forecast :10 past the hour.

Huge Winter Storm Continues To Impact U.S.

While much of the country will be <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/Rare%20Winter%20Storm%20Threatens%20Over%20130%20Million">impacted by wintry weather</a>, a small portion of the south will be impacted by severe storms today! Portions of Florida and Georgia are feeling the warmth, and this warm air mass will collide with the advancing cold front, bringing severe thunderstorm risks through Sunday night. Several severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings have already been issued.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/0125-1769380916039.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>With enough instability, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) is issuing a large Slight risk (level 2 out of 5) for severe weather through Sunday. Strong winds and tornadoes remain possible.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-25 153954-1769380799364.png">Heavy rain will also be a factor as these storms move through. Our model data shows swaths of heavy rain across Mississippi and Alabama. Severe Thunderstorms Possible Across the South on Sunday

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

For much of this winter season, the Southwestern United States has been under the influence of a large, blocking ridge of high pressure. This ridge has sent storms well to the north, keeping the southwest dry and warm. While a few soaking systems helped push drought conditions out of California, the Four Corners have been seeing drought conditions worsen with snow pack rivaling the worst on record (snow pack records date back about 40 years).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Screenshot 2026-01-22 130618-1769112396676.png">A wet storm system has moved in from the Pacific bringing heavy rain and snow back to these parched locations. Winter weather alerts remain in place for portions of New Mexico and Arizona lasting through Sunday morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/web1-1769341115291.png">The worst of this low is definitely behind us by Sunday morning rainfall-wise. What's left is some residual snowfall that'll bring some decent totals across New Mexico throughout the day.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/2026-01-25 06-38-54-1769341154993.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Some totals will still measure close to 6" in some areas like near Alamogordo, New Mexico. Rainfall totals still may reach half an inch in some spots in southern Arizona and New Mexico. Rain and Snow Return to the Southwest

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

Sub-freezing temperatures made their way into the South and Southeast once again Sunday into Monday, with lows in the 30s as far south as South Florida! Temperatures Monday morning (above) dropped down to 25 for Jacksonville, FL and 28 in Atlanta, GA.These chilly temps were cold enough to stun cold-blooded Iguanas, which are an invasive species.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2012155375894806776" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2012155375894806776"></div>Freeze Alerts remain through Tuesday morning. These are typically issued at the start or end of the growing season, but in the case of Florida, the growing season is a little more ambiguous. These have been issued because frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation, and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Web1-1768904370694.png">Temperatures by mid to late week will return closer to normal for overnight lows.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/01/Web2-1768904517103.png">

Cold Stuns Iguanas as Another Cold Snap Reaches South Florida

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. Fall and winter become Santa Ana season for southern California. It looks like 2024 will end and 2025 will begin with a round of the signature dry, gusty, fire danger inducing winds. Santa Ana winds are offshore, or northeasterly, winds that descend in elevation in southern California. High pressure over the Great Basin sets up the pattern. As the winds get closer to sea level, they speed up, warm the air and dry things out. This often greatly increases the risk of wildfires. A Santa Ana setup will stir up some dry, gusty winds that have prompting Red Flag Warnings and an elevated fire threat for portions of Southern California.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/12/FIRE SOUTH-1735602572341.png">Red Flag warnings have been issued for areas like the Santa Monica Mountains due to the wind and low humidity. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/12/CA WINDS -1735602572344.png">Fire danger is also elevated for areas in Texas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/12/Screenshot 2024-12-31 052153-1735647719357.png">Make sure to tune into Weather Nation for more details.
