SHERIDAN, WY - The Elk Fire continues to burn in northern Wyoming near Sheridan, the acreage has increased to 91k acres with containment at 28%. Today's forecast calls for increased fire activity because of unseasonably warm temperatures, dry fuels, and low humidity. This fire was caused by lightning.
Fire weather alerts have been issued for through the weekend as our weather pattern begins to change! Expect more rain in the forecast and even some high-country snow, but for now, it is the gusty winds and dry air. Here are the areas of concern, where anything that can spark a flame is not advised!
In addition to the Elk Fire burning in the Big Horn National Forest, the Pack Trail Fire continues to burn over 86k acres. Together, these fires have burned nearly 180k acres.
Air Quality Alerts remain in effect in close proximity to burning fires, due to lofted wildfire smoke. This smoke is expected to get caught in the jet stream and occasionally push into places like Denver and Rapid City.
Meanwhile, fires continue to burn across Southern California. The Line Fire, which has had trouble containing, continues to burn. The good news is that it is up to 93% containment, with cooler air coming in.
