WIND STORM - Intense winds prompted Xcel Energy to cut power for thousands of Colorado residents early Sunday due to the concern of high winds knocking down power lines, creating sparks, and causing wildfires. If you recall, back in 2022, one of the most destructive fires in Colorado State History called the Marshall Fire, destroyed over a thousand homes due to a similar weather setup. High winds knocked out power lines and the sparks from these lines were believed to cause that destructive fire.
High wind alerts have ended across the western Plains, and power has been turned back on and restored for many. As of Monday morning, a little more than 55,000 customers in Colorado remain without power. This follows nearly 90% of Boulder County without power on Sunday following the windstorm.
We're dealing with elevated and critical fire danger for some in Texas and New Mexico on Monday and Tuesday. Avoid any outdoor burning, don't toss cigarette butts and please check your car for any dragging/loose chains.
Here are some tips to avoid wildfire activity.
