Meteorologist Jesse Kelley is excited to join the talented staff at Weather Nation. Jesse spent most of his childhood in Birmingham, Alabama. The state of Alabama is prone to seeing various types of weather from severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and winter weather. For college, Jesse attended the University of South Alabama where he received his degree in Broadcast Meteorology along with minors in Math and Geography. Severe weather rolled across the Upper Midwest on Thursday, bringing with it a very late-season severe weather event (especially for late September)! Wind and hail damage are the primary hazards expected.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/1-1726868227549.png">With the daytime heating, we are seeing thunderstorms on the increase in batches in the Great Lakes and Central Plains of Missouri and Kansas. Storms will remain very isolated into the nighttime hours! As a lover of math and science, Steve had a consistent interest in weather in elementary, middle, and high school before discovering you can major in meteorology. The severe weather outlook on Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday looks a lot like a foliage map, doesn't it? The yellows, the oranges, and the reds show a day, to day, to day severe weather potential across the central United States.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/30-1726874208766.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>On Friday night, strengthening jet stream winds will help lift thunderstorms into the atmosphere, giving them the potential of wind gusts in excess of 58 miles per hour. Why 58 mph? That's the minimum velocity of a wind to qualify it as a severe wind gusts. In fact, we already have had some wind gusts up to around 60 mph in parts of Kansas and Arkansas earlier Friday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-20 171248-1726874217246.png">On Saturday, the weather will be changing quite a bit. An area of low pressure will be developing across the southern Colorado Rockies, tapping into the cold, mountain air and colliding it with the hot air across the Plains. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/weekend-rain-and-snow-chances-for-front-range-and-rockies">Related Article: Snow Coming to the Colorado Rockies This Weekend.</a> It will turn cloudier, cooler, and wetter in parts of the Plains and severe weather will be a possibility too.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/31-1726874226653.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>On Sunday, the aforementioned low pressure system will continue moving along the boundary between cool, moist air and hot, dry air. As a result, additional severe thunderstorms will be possible in the central and Southern Plains, including Kansas City, Oklahoma City, and Lubbock.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-20 171556-1726874236788.png">Severe weather can occur during any month and at any time. That's why you should be prepared for severe weather when it's in the forecast!

Statistically, we are now past the climatological peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, which happened on September 10th. However, based on accumulated cyclone energy (ACE), we still have about 35% of the hurricane season left. Currently, things are looking quiet in the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific.Gordon's remnants remain in the Atlantic after making no impact on land. We now are watching an area of disorganized showers and storms associated with these remnants. However, the chances of formation have been decreasing and now sit at 10%.Another area of potential formation is the western Caribbean and southern Gulf of Mexico. A trough digging south past Florida will stall this weekend, leading to the formation of a low pressure system through the weekend or early next week. The low is then expected to move north into the Gulf of Mexico, where its fate remains uncertain. The National Hurricane Center gives this region a medium chance to develop in the next week. Residents and those with interests along the Gulf of Mexico should monitor the development of this system closely, and should be checking to make sure their hurricane plan is ready.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-20 170124-1726873295583.png">Sea-surface temperatures in the Gulf remain favorable for fueling the development of tropical systems, in fact, both of these basins are at <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://bmcnoldy.earth.miami.edu/tropics/ohc/">record warm levels</a>.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/sst-1726743715266.png">In the Eastern Pacific, we are monitoring an area of the coast of Mexico for possible development in the next seven days. The impacts from whatever develops should stay away from land for now!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/pic3-1726864555076.png">The outlook for September 25 - October 1 has areas of medium to high potential tropical development in the western Caribbean and southern Gulf of Mexico. Tropical Update: Three Areas of Interest in the Atlantic

The calendar officially turns to the season of Fall starting Sunday, September 22 at 8:44 AM ET. The first taste of Fall will arrive this weekend with the upcoming chances of rain and snow. Beginning Friday, the West Coast low-pressure system moves into the Four Corners and will eject into the Plains this weekend. Out ahead of the weather system, some Winter Weather Advisories have been issued in parts of the Rockies and Pikes Peak this weekend. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-20 164432-1726873419518.jpg">Snowfall amounts will be greatest above 9,000 feet elevation from midday Saturday through midday Sunday. Totals could reach up to 4-9 inches, with the highest snowfall predictions up to 11 inches! <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/1-1726867719526.png">On the warmer side, there will be a few strong to severe thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday as a Colorado low begins to develop. The biggest threats will be damaging winds and large hail on both days.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/1-1726867923816.png">Thunderstorms will develop in New Mexico and Texas due to afternoon heating on Friday. More thunderstorms are likely across the area on Saturday, and eventually, the moisture will work into the urban corridor of Colorado Saturday evening and night. As temperatures cool, snow will be falling west of Denver. Travel could be affected on Interstate 70. On Sunday, the rain should exit and push into Kansas and the rest of the Central Plains.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Baron 2-1726868038791.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Heavy rain will be possible east of Interstate 25 and several inches will fall especially in Eastern Colorado and Kansas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/1-1726868081826.png">Tune into to WeatherNation for the latest details.

Snow Coming to the Colorado Rockies This Weekend

Earth is about to get a new asteroid friend, but not the kind that crashes and causes havoc. It’s more of an “in-laws that overstay their welcome” kind of situation. Here’s what you need to know about a new mini-moon:&nbsp;<h3>What’s happening?&nbsp;</h3>Back in August, the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) program discovered a roughly 10-meter-wide asteroid from the Arjuna asteroid belt that will get close enough to Earth to classify it as a “mini-moon” starting on September 29th. The report <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2515-5172/ad781f">published in the American Astronomical Society journal</a>, said&nbsp;asteroid 2024 PT5 will make a horseshoe shaped orbit around our planet over the course of 57 days; ending on November 25th.&nbsp;<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1833588006353310110" src="https://x.com/tony873004/status/1833588006353310110"></div>&nbsp;<h3>What is a “Mini-Moon"?&nbsp;</h3>“Mini-moons” can range from asteroids to random pieces of space junk floating around. These near-Earth objects will enter Earth’s gravitational pull and will often complete at least a partial revolution around our planet. Sometimes the object doesn’t even complete a full revolution before exiting and continuing its regular heliocentric trajectories. &nbsp;While asteroid 2024 PT5 won’t complete a full orbit of Earth, some astronomers may call it a “temporarily captured flyby”.&nbsp;<h3>Will I be able to see it?&nbsp;</h3>Short answer: no.&nbsp;Long answer: 2024 PT5 won’t be bright enough, even with a typical home telescope. &nbsp;NASA classifies how bright celestial objects are by their magnitude. Low numbers, including negatives, are brighter, while higher numbers are fainter.&nbsp;2024 PT5 has a magnitude of 27.595. The naked eye can see objects as faint as roughly 6.5 magnitude, and a traditional 12-inch telescope can see things with magnitudes between 16-17. To put it in perspective, the moon sits at –13 magnitude. &nbsp;<h3>Is this a rare event?&nbsp;</h3>These phenomena aren’t partially rare as the Earth can capture Near Earth Objects all the time. In 2022, a mini-moon called Asteroid 2022 YG entered the Earth’s orbit. Our planet has had a repeated visitor of 2022 NX1 asteroid who became a mini-moon in both 1981 and 2022. That asteroid won’t be back until 2051 though. &nbsp;In fact, this happens so often, some researchers believe Earth always has at least one mini-moon hovering in space. &nbsp;&nbsp;

On Monday afternoon, the NHC issued its last update on what was PTC (Potential Tropical Cyclone) 8, as it made its way onshore. The system did not show enough tropical attributes to be given a name, however, its impacts are long lasting in the Carolinas. Impressive rainfall totals surpassed a foot and a half near Carolina Beach, North Carolina. Rainfall totals from 15"-20" caused multiple areas of flooding.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/ptc eightttt-1726610720451.png">Strong winds were recorded in North Carolina on Monday. Gusts exceeded 75 mph in Sunny Point. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-17 063154-1726576334128.png">Visitor and residents say they were caught off guard by the extent of the impacts to the coastal city of Carolina Beach.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1835765598686527527" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1835765598686527527"></div>Now, the Northeast is expected to receive some rain, gusty winds, and coastal flooding from this area of low pressure. Along with the incoming coastal low, rain and thunderstorms will be increasing from the west with the upcoming storm system from the Great Lakes moving in. This could spur a few severe storms on Saturday from PA through VA.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-20 063352-1726835641477.png">Rainfall could be heavy at times, with totals surpassing 2-3" in some areas! Flash flooding is not expected, but nuisance and urban flooding is certainly possible.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/2024-09-20 06-30-34-1726835473764.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video> Flooding along the coast remains with Coastal Flood Advisories through Friday. LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA - The Bridge Fire exploded Tuesday September 10, across the San Gabriel Mountains, north of Glendora, CA, and has quickly become California's largest active wildfire. Evacuation orders were issued for portions of Los Angeles and San Bernadino County including Camp Williams Resort, San Antonio Dam, Mount Baldy Ski Resort, and Wrightwood. Now the fire has grown to nearly 55,000 acres but has a 41% containment and evacuation orders were lifted.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1836603643124121675" src="https://x.com/Angeles_NF/status/1836603643124121675"></div>The Airport Fire in southern California has burned over 23,000 acres, prompting mandatory evacuations in Orange and Riverside Counties including Caspers Regional Park, San Juan Springs, and Blue Jay Campground. According to the Cal Fire, over 120 resident structures and 40 other buildings have been destroyed by this fire and over 30 more damaged. The Bridge fire is 39% contained. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1836599301411344849" src="https://x.com/OCFireAuthority/status/1836599301411344849"></div>The Line Fire has prompted evacuations in San Bernardino County, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2024/9/5/line-fire/">including for the town of Big Bear</a>, as flames have burned over 39k acres. According to Inciweb, all National Forest lands, trails, and roads are closed to the public including San Goronio Wilderness.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1836438200442851506" src="https://x.com/SanBernardinoNF/status/1836438200442851506"></div><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Fire -1726744314530.png">Near Reno, the Davis Fire has brought smoky skies to the Lake Tahoe area, with 92% containment so far. The fire has grown to over 5,800 acres, burning along the western shore of Washoe Lake, north of Carson City. Flood Watches are still in place from Texas to West Virginia this Thursday. Heavy rain continues to fall across these areas. The greatest threat for flooding is located across Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi for Thursday, but that threat shifts north and east for Friday.
