<p>Multiple low-pressure systems eject from the Rockies and move into the Plains, keeping the forecast active with multiple severe weather chances. Our first round of severe weather impacts the Chicago metro and Great Lakes region on Monday before more energy and storm potential come into play on Tuesday and Wednesday. A <strong>MODERATE</strong> risk (level 4 out of 5) has been issued for the Quad Cities and surrounding region on Tuesday.</p><h2>OVERNIGHT </h2><p>Storms continue overnight but lose potency. Our Tuesday storm chance, meanwhile, pushes east through the I-29 corridor of Iowa and the Dakotas overnight.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/MICHIGAN STORMS-1716258384250.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Tuesday</h2><p>Energy arrives from the Plains on Tuesday with more storm potential for the Upper Midwest. There is a widespread <strong>ENHANCED</strong> risk in the Upper Midwest with a <strong>MODERATE</strong> risk through eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a significant tornado threat for Des Moines, Davenport, and Madison. This also comes with a risk for extremely strong winds, where gusts of 75+ mph are possible, and large hail towards Omaha and western Iowa along with the northern suburbs of Kansas City.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/sig threat-1716247504247.jpg">A low develops and strengthens providing lift and instability changes to support severe storm development. A few morning storms are possible along I-90 with damaging winds the most likely threat in South Dakota, Minnesota, and northern Wisconsin. A secondary line of storms develops along the cold front Tuesday afternoon and evening posing the risk of tornadic supercells and strong winds through eastern Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-20 12-07-40-1716228540876.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Wednesday</h2><p>The same front that produces severe storms on Tuesday moves east on Wednesday with the threat of severe weather from San Angelo, TX to Buffalo, NY. The primary threats are pockets of large hail and damaging wind gusts. A few storms start the day in the Mississippi delta with additional storm development around the area of low pressure moving through southern Missouri. We will see individual storm cells cluster into a line of storms on Wednesday evening pushing through the Midwest and Midsouth with heavy rain and damaging winds along with embedded tornadoes.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-20 07-21-50-1716212303921.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Flooding will be possible, with the risk of 2-4"+ of rain in the Upper Midwest. These regions have been particularly wet over the last couple of months so additional rainfall could quickly flood fields and make for high-running rivers, creeks, and streams.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/qpf-1716212522279.jpg"></p>

Hurricane Force Winds, Tornadoes for the Midwest this Week

<p>We've already seen our fair share of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/storms-ripped-through-the-plains-sunday"><strong><em><u>strong storms for the start of this week</u></em></strong></a>, including multiple EF-2 tornadoes in the Oklahoma City metro. (see below), but we can't let severe weather fatigue get the best of us. Our multi-day severe threat started on Sunday but continues through the middle and end of this week.  </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/TORNADO REPORT -1716258531988.png">Through tonight all forms of severe weather are possible, so we could see a few tornadoes spin up, large hail, and damaging winds. Specifically, the last two pose the highest risk with significant threats for 2"+ in diameter hailstones and 75+ mph wind gusts.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/sigs-1716223979157.jpg">Storm development occurs off the spine of the Rocky Mountains before moving east and hitting the warm, moist air over the Plains. The storms forming along the CO/WY/NE line start as supercells with large hail, damaging winds, and a tornadic potential. Unfortunately, there is the potential of an overnight severe threat into Tuesday morning as these supercells cluster into a line of storms in South Dakota and Nebraska. Monday Forecast: Severe Weather in the Great Plains

<p>More severe weather is ahead for the southern Plains from Tuesday through Thursday as an area of low pressure and dryline builds. A few supercells develop in the heat of the day on Tuesday and move through Oklahoma and southern Texas. Most of these fade through sundown but a few storms linger into the overnight hours.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/txtue-1716258517843.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>An area of low pressure arrives in the southern Plains on Wednesday aiding with lift for storm development during the afternoon and evening hours. Individual storms develop into a line that pushes through eastern Oklahoma and northern Texas by Wednesday night with a damaging wind threat and embedded tornadoes possible.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/txwed-1716258545567.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>On Thursday the Storm Prediction Center issued another outlook including Dallas, Oklahoma, Tulsa, and Shreveport for the risk of severe storms. There will be a large moisture surge across the southern Plains on Thursday which will aid in storm development. Multi-day Severe Weather Threat in the Southern Plains

Credit: NASA</em></p><p>Tomorrow Boeing's Starliner Crewed test flight is hoping to launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Starliner was originally supposed to launch on Monday, May 6th but has been delayed two weeks due to a mechanical issue. According to Boeing, "Starliner teams are working to resolve a small helium leak detected in the spacecraft’s service module traced to a flange on a single reaction control system thruster. Helium is used in spacecraft thruster systems to allow the thrusters to fire and is not combustible or toxic."</p><p>This mission is the second of the Boeing-NASA contract which included one uncrewed mission in May 2022, this first test crew mission and six more trips to the ISS.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1787689554905833889" src="https://twitter.com/BoeingSpace/status/1787689554905833889"></div><p>The launch was then rescheduled for May 10th and then May 17th but crews needed additional time to test the spacecraft and ensure it was safe. The Starliner will launch carrying two astronauts - Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams - to the International Space Station, now set for 4:43 PM ET on Tuesday, May 21st. The Saturn IV rocket and Starliner remain on the launchpad awaiting their next opportunity to launch. According to Boeing, "About 15 minutes after launch, Atlas' Centaur upper stage shuts down, sending Starliner on its way to the International Space Station."</p><p>So how is the forecasting looking for launch? Right now skies look to be clear around Cape Canaveral so the weather won't be a huge interrupter for the forecast. For Starliner to  launch the weather must have winds below 31 mph, no thunderstorms or lightning in the landing area or waves above 13.1 feet. Right now, none of that is in the forecast.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/forecast-1716215185212.jpg">If you're planning to watch the launch, temperatures in and around the Space Coast will be in the low and mid 80s. <p>Large hail and intensely strong winds made their presence known in the Plains on Sunday. Winds as high as 100 mph were reported Sunday afternoon in Kansas and hail as large as 3" in diameter in the city of Ellis. In addition to this, a tornado emergency was issued for Custer City, Oklahoma. This storm went on to produce a tornado outside of the Oklahoma City Metro. Our Field Correspondent, Brett Adair, took the compilation of videos below, including some damage from town. <p>A surface cold front moving south across Florida will continue to push scattered thunderstorms through the area. We may even acquire some supercell thunderstorms that could pose a risk of large hail and damaging winds.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-20 12-45-52-1716230782969.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Monday's SPC outlook is a<strong> MARGINAL</strong> (level 1 out of 5) risk. This is a low-end threat, but a slightly unstable environment could support storms capable of severe wind or hail in Southeast Florida.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Florida Marg-1716206798934.png">The other factor in Florida will be hot temperatures thanks to the high moisture content of the air and a ridge of high pressure that keeps temperatures soaring into the 90s. <p>More strong heat and humidity will build over Southern Texas this week. There are still roughly 200k+ customers without power in the Houston metro following strong storms last week that brought 100+ mph winds and tornadoes to Harris County. For those without A/C, seek cool spaces, take it easy when cleaning up damage, and stay hydrated.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/houston-1716214411142.jpg">The hot temps and the extreme heat index values will continue into the start of your week. Today temperatures will be well into the triple digits, with cities like Brownsville feeling like 108° and Laredo feeling like 111°!</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/highs monday-1716207902814.png">This heat will dominate the forecast all week with very little relief from the heat and humidity, especially in East Texas. Temperatures remain in the 90s for many with even 100° for San Antonio into the weekend. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/three day-1716214077222.jpg">Heat is a contributing factor to the fire danger threat across the desert southwest - high temperatures and low humidity will evaporate any moisture that soils and grasses hold, allowing more rapid spread of flames if a fire were to start. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/red flog-1716214077225.jpg">  </p>

<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

<p>Snow snarled traffic along I-95 in the Mid-Atlantic Friday morning, and more snow fell towards the Atlantic coast Friday afternoon and evening. The airflow pattern should continue to bring some isolated lake-effect bands to areas along Lake Erie and Lake Ontario through Saturday morning.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/01/FORECAST-1705716006088.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>The snow chances Saturday will be extremely isolated and should start to completely wind down by the afternoon.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/01/pic2-1705715183527.png">The other story with this set-up will be how cold it gets across the Northeast.
