Strong storms and heavy rainfall have been concerns in the south for the past few days as storms have moved around the edge of this persistent high pressure in the Gulf. This includes numerous wind reports from Alabama and South Carolina the last 48 hours, where clusters of storms produced gusts up to 60 mph.

A slight risk of severe storms has been predicted for parts of Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama meaning scattered severe storms could drop 1-2" thick hail and produce 60-70 mph winds.

In this case, the wind seems to be the bigger factor for Nashville, Chattanooga, Gadsden, Huntsville, and Birmingham with the potential for some powerful wind gusts today.

Frankly, weather models have had a hard time grasping the clarity of today's severe weather potential and where/when storms will hit. That said, be weather aware to the fact that it's mid-August and thunderstorms can happen almost anywhere and almost any time!
