A strong low-pressure system moved across the Deep South and Southeast Saturday, producing intense rainfall and severe storms. Saturday morning, there were even a couple of confirmed tornadoes; one north of Dothan, Alabama, and the other in Brockton, Georgia (red dots below). The National Weather Service office in Tallahassee surveyed the damage in Dale County, Alabama and determined that the tornado was on the ground for over 4 miles, producing 105 mph winds at its strongest point.
Gusty winds from a storm in Charleston, South Carolina Saturday morning did damage to several businesses. This is after scattered hail reports both Thursday and Friday that got up to golf ball and baseball size from Texas to Mississippi!
Severe weather season is just getting started, with activity ramping up during April and May when we climatologically see the most amount of tornadoes.
