Now that July has come to an end, the finally tallies for monthly weather records have been calculated across the United States.  One location witnessing a new monthly record was Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.  July 2018 will go down in the history books as the wettest July on record.  Cape Hatteras picked up 20.31 inches of rainfall, nearly double the previous record (10.85 inches) and quadruple the monthly average (4.99 inches)!  What might be even more impressive is the fact that this rainfall total was not influenced by a tropical storm or hurricane. July 2018 is also the second wettest month ever for Cape Hatteras.  Only one other month---June 1949---had more rain.  All other months in the list below were influenced with tropical storm and hurricane rainfall. Looking ahead, the chance for isolated thunderstorms will remain in the forecast for Cape Hatteras through Friday.  The heavy rain threat will be located farther west and north.
