WATCH as a tornado touches down in southern New York near the city of Binghamton.
This was part of a larger system that produced severe alerts across 11 states and delayed over 2,600 flights from New York to Alabama on Monday afternoon. At the height of the storm activity Monday night, nearly 1 million customers were without power along the East Coast.
Numerous tornado warnings were issued for the southern tier of New York as supercell storms moved through the area. Damage was reported and the National Weather Service Office in Binghamton, NY is conducting storm surveys on Tuesday, August 8th to determine the strength of the tornadoes that touched down in southern New York and northern Pennsylvania.
This area of New York has hills and changes in terrain that can aid in shear (localized change in wind speed or direction) around the thunderstorm, and aid with further rotation. The area was under a MODERATE risk of severe weather as highlighted by the Storm Prediction Center (SPC). The last time this region was under a MODERATE risk was May 15, 2018. May 2018 was an active month for severe weather in New York: a moderate risk was also issued in the area just 2 weeks early on May 4th.
