She stayed in the northeast for her education, graduating Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Oswego with a B.S. in Meteorology. Just a few days after graduation, she made the cross country move to Colorado Springs, CO to begin her career at KKTV, the CBS affiliate. Lucy has covered historic blizzards, tornadoes, windstorms, the largest wildfires in Colorado state history and dust storms ... they truly "get it all" in Colorado! More people die from heat every year than ALL other extreme weather COMBINED. So how do you know how hot it is it really going to be?&nbsp;The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration [NOAA] and the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control [CDC] worked collaboratively to produce a new HeatRisk tool rolling out this summer from coast to coast. The tool had previously been used on the West Coast, but the 2024 summer will bring this experimental product to all cities across the U.S. According to Kimberly McMahon, the NWS Public Weather Services Program Manager, "HeatRisk is a great tool to just put into context, how hot it's going to be compared to what they're used to." The HeatRisk scale ranges from minor to extreme impacts and is color-coded from yellow to magenta. For reference, a MINOR impact day is your typical summer day.&nbsp;MODERATE days bring impact to vulnerable populations, especially people who are in the sun for long periods or without A/C. On these days, fans and open windows help to alleviate heat impacts inside.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/major-1713896597233.jpg">MAJOR impact days can be deadly for those without A/C and power interruptions are possible due to the heat stress. Hospitals are likely to see an increase in the number of ER visits due to heat-related illnesses. Outdoor activities should be shifted to cooler times of the day.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/mod-1713896597231.jpg">Finally, EXTREME impact days are for long-duration or potentially record-breaking heat events. There will be little to no relief from the heat overnight... and power outages are likely due to the stress on the grid. Outdoor activities should be canceled, and you should stay in cool spaces.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2023 during Phoenix's month-long stretch of 100°+ degree days, more people died in their un-air conditions homes than outdoors. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/xtreme-1713896597235.jpg">The HeatRisk tool incorporated heat forecast and historical data from NOAA to include: how above normal the temperatures are, the time of year, the duration of the heat, and overnight relief potential.&nbsp;It also considers at what temperature heat deaths occur for over 700 cities in the U.S.. That data was imperative in designing the tool to know at what level heat becomes deadly, unique to geographic location. For example, Phoenix's 110°, though hot, wouldn't be an "extreme" day during the summer. Take that same 110° but for Chicago? The risk becomes extreme. Look for the new HeatRisk product and temperature forecasts this summer on WeatherNationTV. National Park Week started Saturday, April 20th, and runs through Sunday, April 28th, It is a week to celebrate the over <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nps.gov/findapark/index.htm">400 National Parks</a>! Throughout the week, parks will host events to highlight the unique nature of the parks, how you can volunteer, and the innovation happening across the country. The heavily forested park offers hiking, camping, stargazing, and more. This park boasts incredible wildlife and views as well as some of Alaska’s extreme weather.&nbsp;<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/U3IM3w8M1Yc?si=i22NXFs0uVL_TX3y" start="0"></iframe></div><h2>Lava Beds National Park (N. California)</h2>Sitting just south of Oregon, Lava Beds National Monument is surrounded by volcanos. Visitors can explore lava tubes ranging in difficulty from easy to expert. This gives people a chance to explore the “volcanic plumbing” of the region. &nbsp;<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6c0aGmAgC38?si=BPzHjKS7iBSK5K3X" start="0"></iframe></div><h2>Black Canyon of the Gunnison N.P. (Colorado)</h2>Black Canyon of the Gunnison is the steepest and narrowest canyon of the entire U.S. and sits in Southwest Colorado. National Park Week: Get Out and Explore

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. Across the northern tier of the United States, we have Mars, Uranus, Neptune, Saturn, Pluto, and Blue Earth to name a few. Forecast highs will bump out of the near-freezing mark the morning will bring us for many of these cities.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/north-1713810377590.png">Across the southern U.S., we have Mercury, Venus, Globe, Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto. Monday, April 22nd - Earth Day!

The Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) took a look back at the number of atmospheric rivers of the 2023-2024 season starting when the water year began in October.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Slide1-1712842543982.png">An atmospheric river is a concentrated plume of moisture in the mid-levels of the atmosphere that transports large amounts of moisture onshore. When the plume hits the higher elevations of the West Coast the moisture then falls in the form of rain and snow. Atmospheric rivers are responsible for large rain and snow accumulation during the Winter and Spring months and are essential for filling reservoirs on the West Coast.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/2024-04-11 07-55-48-1712843811769.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>A total of 51 Atmospheric Rivers hit the West Coast this year, including two extreme events, one on December 5th along the Washington/Oregon border and another on January 31st in Oregon. Far more were the number of moderate atmospheric rivers that hit up and down the West Coast. This year the vast majority of landfilling ARs were in Washington, Oregon, and northern California, in part because of an ENSO neutral pattern where the Pacific Jet is typically aligned with the Northwest.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/ENOS-1712844476092.jpg">Though 2023-2024 had 13 more atmospheric rivers than the impactful 2022-23 season, this year brought a smaller number of extreme AR events and fewer to southern and central California (due to the jet stream track mentioned above). The 2022-23 season's few numbers of extreme AR events mean the state of California was at 200% of the average for precipitation. The 2023-24 season, though characterized by fewer strong and extreme events had plenty of weak ARs to leave the states at or slightly above precipitation for the winter months.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/AR scla-1712844476095.jpg">So what does this mean for California's all important reservoirs? At last update, reservoirs are at 117% of average state-wide thanks to slightly above average rainfall this winter and snowpack sitting at 111% of average state-wide. For the most up to date conditions on reservoirs and snowpack, you can visit California's <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cww.water.ca.gov/">tracking page here</a>. There is concern for ground water supply, especially in the central valley where soil moisture is dry as of mid-April. Snowmelt in the Spring should help to boost those levels. According to the CW3E, "The strongest atmospheric river to impact Central and Southern California occurred on February 4-6 ... Downtown Los Angeles received 8.51 inches of rain, which was the second wettest 3-day stretch on record. This event was a great example how only a few strong storms over Southern California can make or break a water year." The heavy rain caused <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/major-flood-event-expected-in-california">numerous water rescues</a> around the city of L.A. with tornado warnings just east of San Diego. Mudslides and debris flow around the L.A. suburbs also closed roadways and created damage for neighborhoods. In the mountains, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/heavy-snow-in-california">impressive snowfall</a> came down in the Sierra Nevada!<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1754995886403518971" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1754995886403518971"></div>Another notable atmospheric river event was in early December 2023, when an extreme AR hit Oregon and Washington state. First ... Solar eclipses only happen during a new moon when the moon and sun are on the same side of the Earth.&nbsp;Second ... The Moon's orbit around the Earth is a bit tilted meaning its shadow doesn’t always line up with Earth. For a total solar eclipse to happen, the Earth, Sun, and Moon need to be in a straight line with the moon placed directly between the Earth and Sun which happens only twice a year.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even though the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun, its closer position to the Earth allows it to block out the sun when everything aligns.&nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/setup1-1711639803722.jpg">Depending on the position of the moon, totality can vary in length. This year we will be dark for an average of 3 ½ to 4 minutes. Carving a path from Del Rio TX to Burlington VT with the cities of Dallas, Little Rock, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo all in the path of totality.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/path-1711638247652.jpg">#2 This will be a total solar eclipse, where the moon blocks ALL the sun’s light. They are rippling waves of light and darkness that give a “movie-esq” effect.</li><li>No matter where you're watching from in the U.S., all of us will see some level of eclipse coverage. Instead of looking, up, turn your gaze down, and you’ll see tiny crescent shadows on the ground! We are bringing you some of the stories and cultural significance of total solar eclipses around the world in this WeatherNation web exclusive.In Ancient China, eclipses were believed to be a dragon trying to eat the sun, and people needed to make as much noise as possible to scare it off.&nbsp;The Chinese would bang pots and pans to try and scare the dragon away.For West African tribes, the Batammaliba people in Togo and Benin, the cosmic event is the result of the sun and moon fighting and trying to resolve their differences. They believed it meant that communities on Earth should come together and resolve their conflicts too.&nbsp;Indigenous tribes across North America have their eclipse traditions as well. Kit grew up in the Piedmont of North Carolina outside of Charlotte, spending most of his childhood in Belmont, an old mill town on the Catawba River now grown into a bustling suburb. He had a passion for mathematics and science through grade school, having ambitions to become an architect, engineer, theoretical/astrophysicist, or geologist, but eventually choosing to pursue Meteorology. He went to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to obtain his degree, taking all electives on atmospheric sensing, tropical, and mesoscale meteorology for a full, in-depth understanding of the atmosphere (though he maintains on every hike, he should have taken more geology classes!) He interned at WCNC in Charlotte, learning the craft of presenting off-script and how to tell a weather story. After Graduation, he worked in the Quad Cities at WHBF-TV and KLJB-TV, the CBS/Fox affiliates. From there, he moved to Grand Island, Nebraska at KSNB-TV, the NBC affiliate for Central Nebraska. The active winters and severe seasons kept him busy, experiencing a wide range of wild weather. He remembers the most impactful event in March of 2019, when a massive snowmelt, heavy rain, and blizzard all struck the state in 36 hours. Kit later moved to the Denver area taking a job as a Producer with WeatherNation. At 10:23am EDT Friday morning, residents in New Jersey felt some moderate shaking of the earth beneath them. A M4.8 Earthquake struck, with an epicenter in Northeast Hunterdon County, about 8 miles northwest of Bridgewater.<img src="https://earthquake.usgs.gov/realtime/product/dyfi/us7000ma74/us/1712331453719/us7000ma74_ciim_geo.jpg" alt="DYFI intensity map">Light to moderate shaking was reported to the USGS near the epicenter and in New York City, with very weak shaking as far as Baltimore, MD, Harrisburg, PA, and Springfield, MA.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/SOT_040524_TRT 0.26_RNE_LEHIGH VALLEY, PA_ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE VIDEO OF THIS GUY SAYING IT'S GONNA BE A NICE DAY THEN FREAKS OUT ABOUT EARTHQUAKE. CURSING REMOVED_SF_RICHARD SNYDER_NC_E040524-1712336556497.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Later in the afternoon Friday, an aftershock earthquake occurred in the same location and caused more shaking. The aftershock was a little weaker, but still registered a 3.8.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Earthquake-1712370819822.jpg">Earthquakes are not unheard of in this part of the country. In the 18th and 19th centuries, New York City has sustained damage from earthquakes. East Coast damaging quakes come out to a rough average of twice per century. In August of 2011, a M5.8 earthquake struck Northern Virginia, causing shaking from Georgia to New England, and even some minor shaking as far west as Chicago!East Coast earthquakes are less frequent than on the West Coast, but they can be felt much farther away due to the differences in the rock composition. According to the USGS, "a magnitude 4.0 eastern U.S. earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 100 km (60 mi) from where it occurred."<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/VO_040524_RNE_MORRISTOWN, NJ_RING CAMERA CATCHES SHAKING FROM EARTHQUAKE_STORYFUL_JEREMY GODWIN_KW_E040524-1712336577279.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>There is still a chance for aftershocks, which are smaller quakes occurring after an initial shock. Statistically speaking, there is a 50% chance of another quake of magnitude 4.0, though that statistic is mainly used for larger earthquakes so aftershocks are more likely to be much weaker. UPDATE: At 3:59pm EDT, a M4.0 quake did occur, less than two miles east of the original quake.If there are any further quakes, follow these tips to remain safe!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Earthquake Safety Tips-1712336479899.png">On the other side of the world, a much larger earthquake hit Taiwan on Wednesday, a Magnitude 7.4. Earthquake Jostles New Jersey

Colorado State University has released its outlook for the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, calling for an above-average season for named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes. CSU Forecasters, under the leadership of Hurricane Researcher Phil Klotzbach, attribute the above-average forecast to the La Niña conditions expected in the equatorial Pacific Ocean and warmer than average sea surface temperatures in addition to activity from the West African Monsoon. CSU uses "analog" years, or reference years that show similar characteristics to this one; 2024's reference years are 1878, 1926, 1998, 2010, and 2020, all above average years. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/PKG_040324_TRT 3.50_CSU HURRICANE SEASON FORECAST_ROB BRADLEY_NJ_040324-1712238044793.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1 every year, with the Eastern Pacific Hurricane season beginning on May 15. The National Hurricane Center begins issuing tropical outlooks for both basins on May 15. The first name on the list in the Atlantic is Alberto, followed by Beryl. CSU forecasters call for 23 named storms, but the official list only has 21 names. In the past, the National Hurricane Center would revert to the Greek Alphabet, but following confusion in the 2020 season. Now, there is an alternative list of names that span the alphabet again with the first three of Adria, Braylen, and Caridad.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/names-1712236967550.jpg">A La Niña is characterized by cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, which interacts with the atmosphere to produce less shear over the tropical Atlantic. Less shear means storms don't get "pulled apart" and have a better chance of surviving in the Atlantic Ocean. The last time we were in La Niña was in 2022, a hurricane season that was above average.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/la nina outlook-1712236967549.jpg">The 2023 season was influenced by El Niño conditions which typically suppress hurricane season, but warmer than average sea surface temperatures balanced out the influence to give us a generally, average season in 2023.Sea surface temperatures are also a huge factor in this year's forecast. Warm ocean waters help to develop thunderstorms that then congeal into hurricanes. Climatologically, sea surface temps are at their warmest in September, when there are peaks of energy off of the coast of Africa.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/2024-04-04 07-19-57-1712237500749.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Remember, these are just outlooks and Klotzbach says, "it's important to realize that, you know, this is our first forecast. Historically, the skill is modest just because we're still quite a ways from the events we're trying to predict. Hurricane season doesn't really ramp up historically until August. So we still have a few months to go before the season really ramps up. Atlantic Hurricane Season 2024: Expected to be Well Above Average

A strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook the country of Taiwan early Wednesday morning, close to 8:00 local time (8 PM Tuesday night for the U.S. East Coast). Multiple casualties have been reported with hundreds injured. Dozens of buildings collapsed as the city shook.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/VON_040424_INTL_HUALIEN,TAIWAN_HOTEL SHOWING IMMENSE DAMAGE AFTER POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE_STORYFUL_DO_E040324-1712147940483.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The earthquake was located about 10 miles off Hualian on Taiwan's east coast and was about 20 miles deep. The quake even prompted evacuation advisories around Okinawa from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which they later lifted. Powerful Earthquake in Rocks Taiwan

Severe storms slammed the Midwest and Mid-South on Tuesday, producing widespread wind, hail, and tornadoes. The tornado surveys will be coming in the next few days as National Weather Service officials are able to determine the damage. Some of the more notable storm cells and tornado warnings from Tuesday that we will monitor include Charleston, WV, Louisville, KY, Lexington, KY and Sunbright TN. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1775225434520563737" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1775225434520563737"></div>On Tuesday morning, this student was caught in a storm and was completely knocked off their feet at the University of Kentucky. Winds were clocked in West Virginia and Kentucky at over 90 mph - that's hurricane-strength winds. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1775218786854982038" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1775218786854982038"></div>One of the more powerful storms was a tornado that tracked from Southeast Ohio into central West Virginia, producing widespread damage for communities on both sides of the Ohio River. The severe weather threat continues today as it moves to the east. This article has all the information on the risk today and tomorrow: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/midwest-at-risk-of-tornadoes-hail-this-week">Storms Shift into the Midwest.</a>The central and southern U.S. were pummeled by storms on Monday. Briar, TX, which is about 25 miles northwest of Fort Worth, TX, saw grapefruit-sized hail! That's about 4.5" in diameter! Even portions of Kansas dealt with baseball-sized hail.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/hail-1712056388862.png">Sights like this one were a familiar one across a handful of states. This video came out of Cole County, MO where a variety of hailstone sizes were seen from a severe thunderstorm warning. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1774981033563209765" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1774981033563209765"></div>We had multiple severe storm reports, with hail and wind being the most common ones across the board. Grapefruit Hail Pummels Plains, Midwest

The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/">Space Weather Prediction Center</a> has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch through March 25, 2024 while observing SEVERE G4 geomagnetic storming. The forecast expects the G4 status to remain through the first half of March 25th.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/geomagnetic storm forecast tonight-1711298117667.png">So what does this mean? According to the SWPC, when conditions reach SEVERE G4 storm could lead to satellite tracking issues and power voltage problems. These are issues that the general public may not have to worry about, but the appropriate companies that this may affect have likely been notified directly by the SWPC.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/Screenshot 2024-03-24 155204-1711317196416.png">This geomagnetic storm continues due to the response of a coronal mass ejection (CME) that was originally observed late March 22, sending small particles Earth's way. Those particles interact with our atmosphere, leading to the jaw-dropping show. The best of that show looks to be late Sunday night through Monday. With G3 to G4 geomagnetic storming, the Aurora can be visible slightly further south tonight.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/auroro-1711330355933.png">However, a potent low-pressure system will be in the way of many folks in the Northern High Plains. Geomagnetic Storm Watch Issued - Aurora Borealis Visible Farther South

It is officially spring, and signs of the season are here! This includes the official spring outlook released by forecasters at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center and the National Water Center.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/PKG_032124_TRT 1.34_NOAA 2024 SPRING OUTLOOK_ROB BRADLEY_BH_032124-1711047495380.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>For many, it has already felt like spring thanks to the warmest winter on record for the contiguous United States. The official forecast&nbsp;shows a continuation of that pattern with much of the country expecting warmer than average temperatures into the summer months. There is higher confidence&nbsp;in the Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes.&nbsp;After the winter season was the third wettest on average for the U.S., wetter conditions will continue into the spring for the Southeast, Central Plains, and Mid-Atlantic. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/Screenshot 2024-03-21 084532-1711032567992.png">West Texas and New Mexico should be on the lookout for drier-than-average conditions, potentially leading to worsening drought.&nbsp;The Pacific Northwest also has a better chance of seeing below-average precipitation.Because of the warm winter, there is hardly any snowpack coverage, meaning persistent or worsening drought in the High Plains and Great Lakes. The continued wet pattern for the central U.S. should continue the pattern of drought improvement in the Mississippi and Missouri Valley states.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/Screenshot 2024-03-21 084610-1711032567989.png">The potential for significant Spring flooding is low due to winter warmth and limited snowpack. NOAA Spring Outlook: Warm for All, Wet for Southeast

Texas has been hit with extremely heavy rainfall this week with the Trinity River area (85 miles north of Houston) seeing nearly a foot in just 24 hours on Thursday. This closed many roadways Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Arial footage shows widespread flooding in Livingston, TX, and mandatory evacuations were ordered Thursday night for those on the east fork of the San Jacinto River northeast of Houston.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1786100846977245395" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1786100846977245395"></div>River flooding will be a concern near the Trinity and San Jacinto Rivers as upstream dams release water southward! Many rivers are at "major" flood stage, inundating surrounding neighborhoods. The ground in Texas has become saturated in the last week and additional rainfall will be a huge concern for more flooding and overwhelmed waterways. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/tx rive-1714737577265.jpg">Storm clusters continue in South Texas during the first half of Friday before impacting Louisana and I-20 through the deep South. Additional storm development in West Texas on both Friday and Saturday nights could move east overnight and hit East Texas with heavy rainfall and more flooding by the morning, especially on Saturday. Texas: Mandatory Evacuations Issued in the Houston Metro

The severe weather risk continues for west Texas and much of the central Plains after a few tornadoes were confirmed in open country Thursday afternoon. This includes a tornado over Hawley, TX (north of Abilene) that was nearly stationary in the area for several hours. We will update you on the strength of the tornado when the National Weather Service is able to survey the damage. <div class="fb-post" data-href="https://www.facebook.com/WeatherNation/videos/343514008353454" data-width="500" src="https://www.facebook.com/WeatherNation/videos/343514008353454" style="display: flex; justify-content: center"></div>The severe weather risk both Friday and Saturday in Texas favors the Western half of the state where the clash of airmasses (dry and moist) occurs. This will produce a few isolated supercell storms whose primary threats are large hail and tornadoes from Lubbock south to I-20 and I-10. However, storms will be possible throughout central and west Texas into the weekend. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/sig hail-1714737188728.jpg">A few storms are ongoing from Thursday night in East Texas during the first half of Friday. More storm development occurs off the higher terrain of West Texas and northern Mexico Friday afternoon, with help from the dryline and frontal boundary across New Mexico. These storms cluster into heavy rain and damaging hail in West Texas and the Panhandle Friday night, moving east overnight. By Saturday afternoon a similar trend occurs with storm development aided by a stationary front. Tornado Hits West Texas, More Possible Today

Unfortunately, we've had back-to-back weeks of severe weather with our latest impacts from an EF-3 tornado in Westmoreland, Kansas earlier this week. Our thoughts go out to those impacted. EF is short for Enhanced Fujita and can help estimate the maximum winds within a tornado, based on the extent of storm damage. Now, the storm threat continues across much of the same area through the day Friday. Our field correspondent, Brandon Clement, took this video of some of the damage in Westmoreland early Wednesday morning. There were multiple homes impacted with the roof and second-floor stories torn off. There were tractor-trailers tossed around like toys. Trees were snapped in half. According to local media, at least 20 buildings sustained irreparable damage.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/VO_050124_RNC_WESTMORELAND, KS_DRONE VIEW OF TORNADO DAMAGE_WHATSAPP_BRANDON CLEMENT_KW_E050124-1714570595498.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>On Friday, a new low develops off the Rockies to bring another chance of severe weather for the Plains! The biggest threat will be gusty winds and hail, but far western Kansas has a low-end tornado threat. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/spc firday-1714736771109.jpg">Just the last few systems, it will be another late evening and nighttime event as thunderstorms roll across the area. Storms will be more in a line rather than individual which lends itself to damaging winds and heavy rain rather than tornadoes. Heavy rain is possible again over these very saturated soils of the Plains. The energy shifts into the Midwest on Saturday with more low-end severe weather potential. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-03 05-40-01-1714736540066.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Saturday's storms start early, leftover from the previous evening, and continue throughout the day. Storm Threat Continues in the Great Plains

Summer of 1993, New England Dragway. That's when and where Steve knew he wanted to become a meteorologist. More than 20 years later he is extremely fortunate and blessed to be able to live his childhood dream. As a lover of math and science, Steve had a consistent interest in weather in elementary, middle, and high school before discovering you can major in meteorology. He attended Lyndon State College in Vermont where he received a bachelor's in meteorology-broadcasting and associate's in television news. He has worked as a meteorologist and reporter in Winchester, VA, Burlington, VT, and most recently in West Palm Beach, FL. This weekend an incoming storm system will bring widespread wet weather to the West Coast, including high elevation mountain snow! A low-pressure system moves out of the Pacific Ocean and slides onto the West Coast Friday. This incoming storm system pulls in moisture from the Pacific in addition to lift and cold air to get rain and mountain snow across the West.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/12-1714738130435.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The associated cold front moves onshore Friday with heavy coastal and low elevation rain. Overnight as cold air swings in behind the front, rain turns to high elevation mountain snow. As temperatures fall throughout the day Saturday more rain turns to snow, especially in the Sierra Nevada and Cascades. Steady snow continues into Sunday for the highest elevations with rain for lower elevations.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/FORECAST-1714705809876.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>There are some locations which may receive 8-16 inches of snow across the highest mountain peaks! Snow levels will fall to 3,000-4,000 feet most commonly, but may fall as low as 2,500' elevation.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-03 060945-1714738312680.png">If it feels like snow is falling late into the season, you may be surprised to know that the season's last snow for many West Coast communities lingers into May and for the highest elevations, even into June!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/est avg snowfall-1714510694011.jpg">Meanwhile, the lower elevations may accumulate up to two or three inches of rainfall! This will include cities such as Seattle, Portland, and Eureka. Isolated flooding will be possible with these types of rainfall amounts.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-03 060930-1714738403613.png">As this weather system moves across the West, it will whip up a lot of wind! The wind gusts may reach up to 55-65 miles per hour across many states, and especially higher elevations. Secure your property before the wind hits! First Weekend in May Brings Snow to West Coast

Similar areas that have been at risk since the end of April will experience another bout of severe weather from Monday through Wednesday. The Storm Prediction Center [SPC] has issued the severe weather outlook Monday through Wednesday, indicating high confidence in the severe weather potential. On Tuesday the severe weather threat stretches from Arkansas through the Midwest including Chicago, St. Louis and Little Rock. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/spc tuesay-1714738498807.png">On Wednesday the threat shifts a bit further south, to impact southern Missouri, most of Arkansas, eastern Oklahoma, and northeast Texas. All modes of severe weather are on the table. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/spc wednesday-1714738498809.png">This is thanks to another wave of energy from the Pacific moving east throughout the weekend, providing enough lift to support storm development. At the surface we have moisture streaming north contributing to instability ahead of a surface cold front.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-01 10-51-01-1714583042845.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The central and southern Plains are a bullseye for severe weather in May. The moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and cooler air from Canada clash over Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, elevating the severe threat. Multi-Day Severe Outbreak Possible Monday - Wednesday

Numerous high temperature records fell across the Northeast Thursday, including parts of the Interstate 95 corridor! For example, Washington D.C reached a daytime high of 91 degrees and the normal high for this time of the year is 73 degrees!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/1-1714689163309.png"><h2>Northeast</h2>The warmth continues on Friday in the mid-Atlantic while we start to see cold air intrusion in New England. Temperatures fall through the weekend back towards or below average. The reason for the cool down in New England is a cold front that moves on Thursday. It won't produce a whole lot of wet weather, but a few isolated showers in coastal Massachusetts and Maine are possible. More showers arrive with an additional system on Saturday and will contribute to a larger cool-down for the Midwest.<h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-02 070843-1714655381249.png">Southeast</h2>The heat will also impact the Southeast, and while it won't necessarily be record-setting, it will be about 10-15 degrees above normal. Highs jump into the 90s in Florida Peninsula with close to 90 even up into central Alabama. The above average warmth and humidity will help lead to daily chances of afternoon thunderstorms.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-02 070852-1714655390684.png">There is confidence in the above-average temperature forecasting continuing through the next couple of weeks. Temps Climb on the East Coast

Welcome to May! The month normally boasts severe storms, Mother's Day and later sunsets. This weekend will be the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs Saturday evening - and rain could affect things.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Summer countdown-1714568488325.png">A dynamic upper-level low will bring the shot at some storms on Friday to parts of the Ohio River Valley, but models are hinting at a fast moving wave joining the party late Friday night into Saturday. That could meet up with enough moisture to keep scattered showers around northern Kentucky into the first day of the weekend. This is where it could be raining around race-time (below).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/GFS for KY-1714568498978.png">The Kentucky Derby says on its website that it's a "rain or shine" event, so no delays are expected. However, the conditions could be a little muddy for the horses when the gates open Saturday at 6:57 PM ET.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/kentucky derby daypart-1714568509182.png">

Trotting Around Rain Chances at the 150th Kentucky Derby

Spring snow opportunities continue in the Rocky Mountains, with snow expected through the middle of the week from the Cascades of Oregon to the Rockies of Montana, the Tetons of Wyoming, and the Front Range of Colorado. The snow is especially welcomed at ski resorts that are still open. Breckenridge is expected to stay open through May 12th, and Snowbird in Utah is expected to close on Memorial Day Weekend!<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/nwww-1714613142940.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>This active pattern is all thanks to two areas of low pressure in our upper atmosphere, known as "double barrel lows," that follow one right after the other. The low-pressure systems pull in moisture and energy to produce high-elevation snowfall and rainfall for the lower elevations.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/2024-04-30 10-31-43-1714495076445.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Steady snow continues in the highest elevations of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado through Wednesday, with another round of moisture moving onshore for Oregon, mostly as rain. The bottom line is that it stays unsettled in our highest peaks through the end of the week. Snowfall totals will be 6"+ for areas over 8,000' where winter weather advisories are in effect for Montana mountains.

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

It's the second day in a row cities in the northeast broke record high temperatures. Not as many records were broken Tuesday, but areas like D.C. and Binghamton, NY got high enough to break previous records. Temperatures will return closer to seasonal by Friday for many locations. Although, some spots do stay warmer.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Screenshot 2024-04-30 164300-1714516987092.png">Showers and storms swept across the northeast with multiple severe warned storms. We still have the chance of a few isolated severe storms overnight with the potential of strong winds and large hail. A few areas have already seen some larger hailstones reaching 1".<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/FJKJFKLJ-1714526195784.png">Showers and storms will wrap up overnight. Record Highs Hit in the Northeast, Isolated Severe Remains

UPDATE: The National Weather Service out of Norman, Oklahoma, has upgraded the rating of the Marietta tornado to EF-4 with estimated peak winds of 165-170 mph, a path length of 27 miles, and a path width of 900 yards. Unfortunately, this tornado brought at least one fatality to Love County. This tornado developed southwest of Marietta and moved north-northeast over I-25 before moving into Marietta towards Lake Murray and Dickson.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1785021848498876600" src="https://twitter.com/NWSNorman/status/1785021848498876600"></div>Here's a look at the destruction our field corresponded Brandon Clement observed upon daylight on Sunday.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1784689042388668902" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1784689042388668902"></div>The town of Sulphur, OK also took a direct hit from a destructive tornado on Saturday night, with a rating of at least EF3. At Least 33 Tornadoes Reported in Oklahoma this Weekend

Several teams of meteorologists and storm damage experts are actively investigating and surveying damage from Friday, April 26 across the I-80 corridor. According to the National Weather Service of Omaha, at least 5 EF-3 tornadoes have been confirmed.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/04-29 nws omaha-1714445003827.png">It all started when a tornado touched down in Lincoln, NE, just before 3 PM central time on Friday. This storm was tornado-warned for more than 50 miles as it tore through suburbs of the Omaha metro and eventually moved across the Missouri River and into Iowa. It has been confirmed as an EF-3 on the ground for 8.6 miles and with winds of 158 mph. This tornado struck Waverly, NE, a suburb on the NE side of Lincoln, where it derailed a train.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1783955995875565622" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1783955995875565622"></div>An EF-3 tornado was confirmed in Elkhorn, NE on the west side of Omaha. Winds were at 165 mph with this tornado. After the tornado moved through, our field crews observed high-tension power lines snapped in Elkhorn, NE, outside of Omaha. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1784243608318595371" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1784243608318595371"></div>There was a "tornado emergency" issued for the northern suburbs of Omaha, NE, at around 3:45 PM CT Friday as a result of the Elkhorn tornado storm cell. This is the highest level of tornado warning the National Weather Service can issue and signals that there is a confirmed tornado on the ground and an extremely dangerous situation unfolding. A traffic camera in the Omaha area caught the tornado. Another tornado warning was issued for Omaha, including downtown, and damage was confirmed in the region. Additional surveys will be conducted to determine the strength of tornadoes in Omaha. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1783961145100980348" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1783961145100980348"></div>Not only were there confirmed tornadoes in Nebraska, but numerous tornadoes also struck Iowa, impacting western and Central Iowa. Tornadoes Tear Through the Heartland Friday

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

The severe threat has lessened this evening and there is now a GENERAL risk for thunderstorms for the overnight hours and a low threat for severe due to the loss of daytime heating. An isolated storm will be possible, but there will be limited precipitation through the overnight hour for Texas and Louisiana.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/gggg-1714440061662.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Flood Threat</h2>In addition to the severe weather, there is an ongoing flood threat. Many places in the Central and Southern Plains have already seen over 9" of rain in the past few days. This means the ground is already highly saturated in some spots, making it more likely to flood. The Weather Prediction Center has maintained a MARGINAL to SLIGHT risk for flash flooding through Tuesday morning in these areas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/04-29 wpc through tonight-1714419623445.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/04-29 central-1714444898379.png">

A Few Storms Lingering Along The Gulf

Torrential rain fell overnight around the city of Groveton, TX. Flash Flood Emergency 30 Miles Outside of Lufkin Overnight

Snow piled up in the Rocky Mountains this weekend, with over two feet of snow reported in parts of Colorado! Even the Denver metro area saw accumulating snow Saturday morning.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1784356854233178450" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1784356854233178450"></div> Many mountainous areas from the Cascades to the Rockies reported heavy snow from mid-week into the weekend, with the Front Range of Colorado reported the highest totals thus far.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Screenshot 2024-04-28 062758-1714307296262.png">Moisture lingering behind the trough and afternoon heating will lead to a few more pop-up rain and snow showers on Sunday. Winter alerts are in effect for SE Wyoming's Snowy Range, where several inches of snow and gusty winds are expected.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/forecast-1714319083449.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Additional snowfall is only expected to top a few inches on Sunday but could create travel issues on mountain passes, including on I-70 and I-80.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/snow accumulation-1714319142786.jpg">Snow this late in the season is not unusual in the Colorado Rockies. In fact, even more snow is possible toward the end of the computing workweek. Denver has recorded measurable snow into late May - with mountain snow chances lingering even longer. This is great news for the handful of ski resorts that remain open, and hope to extend their season even further.

A critical fire risk is in place for west Texas, eastern Colorado, and New Mexico through the weekend as gusty winds and dry grasses and low humidity create a dangerous situation. If a spark were to start, these are the conditions where rapid, life-threatening fire growth would be possible. Humidity values will be in the teens, meaning there will be no moisture in our atmosphere to help taper fire growth.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/1-1714253426666.png">Gusty winds are anticipated on Sunday, especially through New Mexico and West Texas. Winds could gust up to 40 mph unlike Saturday where gusts reached near 60s mph in Southern New Mexico. If a flame starts, it will move as quickly as the winds, at about 40 mph. We can't stress enough how critical this weekend's fire risk is.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Baron 2-1714253811864.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Drought conditions are extreme and exceptional for southern New Mexico, while most of the region is experiencing moderate drought.
